Passive Persuasion Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Persuade your audience in a 5-7 minutes speech to either believe as you do (passive persuasion) or to take an action (active persuasion).

Use all aspects of quality speeches should be evident in this presentation. This includes having a strong introduction and conclusion, supporting materials, transitions, body language, visual aids, etc. This presentation is professional in nature. Pay attention to subject/verb agreement, dress, posture, tone of voice, etc.

Assignment
Delivery of your speech must be extemporaneous (from note cards). Your grade will suffer severely if you read. You are here to develop your skills as a speaker. Specifically, you must include:
• An appropriate introduction–meeting the criteria discussed in your text.
• At least two main ideas.
• An appropriate conclusion.
• Use of at least four outside sources cited properly. (see details below)
• Two visual aids. If you need special equipment, be sure you let me know so arrangements can be made in advance. (see details below)
• Speech outline in proper format
• Note cards (no more than 5) See chapter 10 for tips on note cards.
Sources
You must have 4 sources in your typed works cited and referenced in your speech. The sources should be in MLA or APA format. Your sources may include interviews, videos, journals, pamphlets, newspapers, books, magazines, TV shows, websites, etc. as long as they come from trustworthy sources.

Choose at least two different types of sources. For example, four websites would not meet the requirements, but two websites and two magazines would.
Visual Aids
You are required to have two visual aids for this speech. Refer to Chapter 13 for information about the types and uses of visual aids. Again, you must have two different types of visual aids. For example, two objects would not meet the requirement, but a map and a graph or an object and a picture would work.

One objective of this assignment is to allow you to practice effective techniques for constructing and presenting visual aids to enhance the clarity and interest of your message, as well as aid in retention. Keep in mind that not all visual aids make the speech more clear.

Some visual may serve to confuse the audience, rather than to enlighten them, and some visuals do not add much to your speech. For example, if I gave a speech on basketball and I showed the class a basketball, it would not add much to the speech. However, if I spoke on shooting techniques and I used the basketball to demonstrate the techniques that would be a much more effective use of my visual aid.

Part of your grade for this speech will be determined by how well you implement the techniques for effective visual aid selection, construction and presentation. Again, this information can be found in Chapter 13.

Speech Outline
Prepare a full-sentence preparation outline to be submitted with your speech. This outline must be typed and should follow the Outline Format Handout and Chapter 10.

Collects the thoughts and expert advice of others who have knowledge of your subject Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

The easiest way to write this paper is to remember the following.

First of all, you are just writing an essay, but an essay that collects the thoughts and expert advice of others who have knowledge of your subject. No, you are not the expert; you are primarily reporting the knowledge you have gained from the experts through reading, conversation, or viewing (i.e. film, television). Thus, you will have to provide a list of sources that you consulted for information on your subject, and you will have to reference those sources throughout the body of your paper.

Second, keep track of the source information. Generally this includes:

(1) The name of the author.
(2) The name of the book, article, magazine, film, television program, Web site and the title of the information found on that site.
(3) The page numbers of the work consulted (interviews, films, television, and most Web pages do not have page numbering)
(4) The publishing information for hardcopy sources (found inside after the title page); names of authors, directors, narrators etc. for films; and the source and http address for the Internet.

There are many variations for item 4 above, so it’s important to recognize the type of source you have so that you can make the best use of the Works Cited models. (See my note at the end of this message regarding the models.)

Documenting Your Paper

Your RP has three main componets: The paper itself, or body. An alphabetical list of sources used in the paper (Works Cited page). References (parenthetical references) in the paper showing which source was used at a given point.

Your RP contains the thoughts of other people, so you must give those people credit by giving references. While you are doing the first draft, whenever you use information from a source, make a note IN THE PAPER at that point reminding yourself of the name of the source and appropriate page numbers (if any).

Medicare Funding; You are chief of staff to your brother-in-law, Representative Howard Hughes Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

You are chief of staff to your brother-in-law, Representative Howard Hughes, who was recently elected to fill out a term in Congress.

He has been asked to participate in a panel discussion on the Medicare funding crisis. You have been asked to prepare paper for him. The panel is asked to respond to a proposal for reducing Medicare expenditures by enrolling participants in HMOs. What does the Congressperson say?

The following key questions must be addressed in the paper:

Is Medicare in a state of crisis? Are radical measures necessary to preserve the program?
How is Medicare funded now? Why do elderly people feel that Medicare is an insurance program and not a welfare program? Is this perception accurate?
Should there be a Medicare program at all? Why should the government be involved in providing insurance to elderly preople? Does Medicare have detrimental effects on the market for healthcare or on the market for health insurance?
Are these economic effects, offset by the positive effects of the Medicare program for the elderly? What about the positive effects of caring for the elderly for society? Are there any externalities here?
Justify your position on either economic efficiency or equity grounds (or both).

Your Congressperson wants to appear intelligent. Do not be afraid to refer to economic theory or theories of distributive justice.

Assignment
Prepare a written response to the questions and requests following the Case Study:

The written assignment should be produced using a word processing program, produced in memo format, and addressed to your congressperson from you.
A guide for writing the case study is posted in Doc Sharing.

An excellent essay will reflect comprehension of the question and original thought rather Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

You may choose one of the following questions to answer. Essays should be well formed
and written in a formal style. A good essay is typically between 150-200 words. An excellent
essay will reflect comprehension of the question and original thought rather than simply repeating back
to me the ideas I have stated in class.

1. The Biblical “Wisdom Literature” includes the books of Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes.
Summarize the basic view of the world presented by Proverbs and discuss the ways in which
Job and Ecclesiastes provide a counterpoint to this view. Provide examples from the Bible to
support your main points.

2. It was argued in class that the Priests were the final editors of the Pentateuch. Discuss the
evidence for this claim and the influence the priests had on the final shape of these books (for
instance, the symmetry between Genesis and Exodus). Provide examples from the Bible to
support your main points.

True Happiness Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

This assignment consists of developing a life plan to maximize “true happiness” (Better thought of as “contentment” and not merely “pleasure) based upon research that validates the plan. This requires that you first research the psychological literature on happiness. You should be looking for valid and credible data demonstrating the things that correlate with happiness. once you have a number of key (and credible!) factors, develop a plan to maximize those factors in your life, both currently and throughout the rest of your life. For example, if you say that money will maximize your happiness in life, you must present research that supports this belief, and a plan that will increase your income. This plan will be judged for its realism, as well as its connection to happiness(i.e if you are four foot two inches tall, don’t say you will become an NBA star!)—–The paper will be graded on two key elements. First will be the credibility and extent of the research used to support your plan. Is the research cited relevant to your plan for maximizing happiness? Is the research credible (e.g. more than one citation is necessary for each element of your plan)? The second major part of the paper will be your creation of a plan, based on what you have learned in your research, that you could realistically implement in your life to improve and maintain your level of happiness. Is your plan related to your research findings? Is your plan realistic and feasible given your life circumstances? is your plan detailed enough to judge?

What is the purpose of a proposal Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

What is the purpose of a proposal?

Writing a proposal is a very important and useful first step in the overall research process. It will help identify and organize your thoughts and arguments and make the actual writing of the essay more efficient and, hopefully, enjoyable. Another important aim of the proposal is to convince the course instructor (i.e. me) that you have a valid topic and that you are approaching it with a sound and verifiable research agenda (ie theories, background material, support, etc.). It will also help you plan your approach and structure your essay.

What should my proposal contain?

Your proposal should include the following:

1. A rational for your choice of the topic. Why is it important? How is it related to this course? What are you hoping to prove, argue or discover? (i.e. what is your thesis). Make sure that you limit your ambitions to what can feasibly be accomplished within the context of a relatively short academic paper. Don’t promise to be exhaustive or to be able to consider every possible angle. Be realistic about what is possible.

2. A short review of other published work related to your topic area. You need to indicate to me that you are basing your ideas and writing on existing scholarship. You also need to make clear what you are contributing to this scholarship and what is “new” or distinct about your essay. In other words, your essay should not just be a summary of what has already been written but must also add to the topic or arguments around that topic.

3. A clear and concise outline of the major sections of your paper. This includes how you will approach the topic, your methods, theories and other research devices (such as surveys, observations, interviews, etc.).
