Persuade your audience in a 5-7 minutes speech to either believe as you do (passive persuasion) or to take an action (active persuasion).

Use all aspects of quality speeches should be evident in this presentation. This includes having a strong introduction and conclusion, supporting materials, transitions, body language, visual aids, etc. This presentation is professional in nature. Pay attention to subject/verb agreement, dress, posture, tone of voice, etc.

Assignment
Delivery of your speech must be extemporaneous (from note cards). Your grade will suffer severely if you read. You are here to develop your skills as a speaker. Specifically, you must include:
• An appropriate introduction–meeting the criteria discussed in your text.
• At least two main ideas.
• An appropriate conclusion.
• Use of at least four outside sources cited properly. (see details below)
• Two visual aids. If you need special equipment, be sure you let me know so arrangements can be made in advance. (see details below)
• Speech outline in proper format
• Note cards (no more than 5) See chapter 10 for tips on note cards.
Sources
You must have 4 sources in your typed works cited and referenced in your speech. The sources should be in MLA or APA format. Your sources may include interviews, videos, journals, pamphlets, newspapers, books, magazines, TV shows, websites, etc. as long as they come from trustworthy sources.

Choose at least two different types of sources. For example, four websites would not meet the requirements, but two websites and two magazines would.
Visual Aids
You are required to have two visual aids for this speech. Refer to Chapter 13 for information about the types and uses of visual aids. Again, you must have two different types of visual aids. For example, two objects would not meet the requirement, but a map and a graph or an object and a picture would work.

One objective of this assignment is to allow you to practice effective techniques for constructing and presenting visual aids to enhance the clarity and interest of your message, as well as aid in retention. Keep in mind that not all visual aids make the speech more clear.

Some visual may serve to confuse the audience, rather than to enlighten them, and some visuals do not add much to your speech. For example, if I gave a speech on basketball and I showed the class a basketball, it would not add much to the speech. However, if I spoke on shooting techniques and I used the basketball to demonstrate the techniques that would be a much more effective use of my visual aid.

Part of your grade for this speech will be determined by how well you implement the techniques for effective visual aid selection, construction and presentation. Again, this information can be found in Chapter 13.

Speech Outline
Prepare a full-sentence preparation outline to be submitted with your speech. This outline must be typed and should follow the Outline Format Handout and Chapter 10.

The easiest way to write this paper is to remember the following.

First of all, you are just writing an essay, but an essay that collects the thoughts and expert advice of others who have knowledge of your subject. No, you are not the expert; you are primarily reporting the knowledge you have gained from the experts through reading, conversation, or viewing (i.e. film, television). Thus, you will have to provide a list of sources that you consulted for information on your subject, and you will have to reference those sources throughout the body of your paper.

Second, keep track of the source information. Generally this includes:

(1) The name of the author.
(2) The name of the book, article, magazine, film, television program, Web site and the title of the information found on that site.
(3) The page numbers of the work consulted (interviews, films, television, and most Web pages do not have page numbering)
(4) The publishing information for hardcopy sources (found inside after the title page); names of authors, directors, narrators etc. for films; and the source and http address for the Internet.

There are many variations for item 4 above, so it’s important to recognize the type of source you have so that you can make the best use of the Works Cited models. (See my note at the end of this message regarding the models.)

Documenting Your Paper

Your RP has three main componets: The paper itself, or body. An alphabetical list of sources used in the paper (Works Cited page). References (parenthetical references) in the paper showing which source was used at a given point.

Your RP contains the thoughts of other people, so you must give those people credit by giving references. While you are doing the first draft, whenever you use information from a source, make a note IN THE PAPER at that point reminding yourself of the name of the source and appropriate page numbers (if any).

1. A rational for your choice of the topic. Why is it important? How is it related to this course? What are you hoping to prove, argue or discover? (i.e. what is your thesis). Make sure that you limit your ambitions to what can feasibly be accomplished within the context of a relatively short academic paper. Don’t promise to be exhaustive or to be able to consider every possible angle. Be realistic about what is possible.

2. A short review of other published work related to your topic area. You need to indicate to me that you are basing your ideas and writing on existing scholarship. You also need to make clear what you are contributing to this scholarship and what is “new” or distinct about your essay. In other words, your essay should not just be a summary of what has already been written but must also add to the topic or arguments around that topic.

3. A clear and concise outline of the major sections of your paper. This includes how you will approach the topic, your methods, theories and other research devices (such as surveys, observations, interviews, etc.).
