There are tons of sources out there on the texts. If you’re having a hard time finding things on Google, try using quotation marks around phrases and playing with the other words in your search query. For example, to figure out the audience of “Dexter,” you could try the search strings:
“dexter” audience
“dexter” demographics
“dexter” “showtime” audience
You need to be creative and try different combinations. Tons and tons of resources are out there.
Choose credible sources. A personal blog by a random internet junkie? Not credible. A personal blog of a professional reviewer? Better. An academic article published through an online journal? Great.
A good first place to check is to Wiki your text, then check the “References” section to read the articles that are cited in that Wiki page. You will need to do more research, but that can be a good start.
To fulfill the requirements of every section of this project, you will need at least 15 sources.

historical situation in which the text was created, published, and received.

This should be a section with a TON of citations. Lots and lots and lots.
Your job is to give us a snapshot of the world that your text came out in. Choose themes in the text and do research about how those subjects were faring in the real world at the time the text came out. For example, if you were doing a Headnotes on The Hunger Games, which was published in 2008, you might want to write about the state of reality TV/politics/war/teen violence/etc in 2008 (using lots of researched citations).
Remember you are writing about the context in which THE TEXT WAS RELEASED. Not the time period that the text is set in. If you are writing about a text that is set in the ’60s but was released in the 2000s, this section will be about the 2000s.
Keep in mind that you DO need to tell us WHEN the text came out and what was going on historically, politically, econmically, and culturally at the time.

Think about all of the rhetors who play a part in the text. If it’s a piece of literature written by one person, the author is obviously your rhetor. But if you’re looking at film or television, think about the director, the writer, the producer, the actors — who is making the choices that impact the way this text is communicates it message? All of these people are potential rhetors to research and write about.
Remember the purpose of this project is to provide information that will be helpful to your peers when they write their Rhetorical Analysis essays. Only provide information that will be USEFUL to someone writing an essay on this topic. Where the director went to college and a list of every single other movie he’s ever directed? Probably not the most useful information. A few lines each about a few movies he’s directed that are in some way similar to the text you’re writing about, and which influenced that text and/or were influenced by it? VERY USEFUL.

Remember this is a RESEARCH PROJECT. You need to have many citations in this section. Do not make claims that are not supported by research.
Find reviews or academic analyses of the text, talking about its message and rhetorical devices. Find interviews with the rhetor talking about the message and rhetorical devices. You don’t need to write your own original analysis — that’s what you’ll be doing in the RA essay. This project is intended to gather background research for that task.
A good resource for finding rhetorical devices is looking at: www.tvtropes.org, which lists all of the tropes and cliches used in TV shows, movies, graphic novels, and other texts.
Remember that you are asked to research rhetorical devices, NOT just symbols. When thinking of rhetorical devices, consider all the choices the rhetor makes that contribute to HOW the text’s message is communicated. Also, rememebr that rhetorical devices are genre/medium specific. If you’re researching a movie, consider writing about rhetorical devices like lighting, camera angles, audio, music, setting, costume, color palette, etc (using reviews to find credible quotes about those things, of course). If you’re writing about a novel or short story, consider point of view, and literary devices like slang, allusions, utopia/dystopia, use of tropes and archetypes, different types of imagery, the mood/tone of the piece, etc., for your rhetorical devices section. Remember that every entry on your rhetorical devices list should contain quotations from AT least one source; watch for what reviewers tend to comment on about the text, and that will help you figure out which rhetorical devices are worth your attention.

Medium: Don’t just talk about whether your text is a short story/movie/TV show/poem/etc and quote AGWR to tell me what those things are. Get more specific about who created and distributed this text. If you’re writing about a short story or poem, this is the section to talk about the magazine it came out in and/or the publisher that put out the collection. If you’re researching a show, give background information on the specific network it aired on. If you’re writing about a movie, talk about the production company and distribution.
Genre: The best way to find out what genre/s a text falls into is to read reviews. Reviewers are very good at identifying genre. Remember that many texts fall in multiple genres. If this is the case, choose a few of the most important and write about those. If the genre is “comedy,” get more specific, because comedy is hard to pin down: is it dramedy? Satire? Parody? Since social work takes a bio-psycho-social, person-in-environment approach to understanding human behavior and psychosocial functioning, you should consider the following questions in developing this section of the paper:

• What systems and ecological concepts are relevant for understanding this person’s functioning?

The point of the assignment is for you to draw on your knowledge of a variety of human behavior theories to construct a “thoughtfully eclectic” understanding of this person’s case. Be specific about how the various theoretical concepts you have chosen are useful in your analysis, supporting your claims with case material. Since this is a theory course (as opposed to a practice or policy course), the paper should focus on a theoretically-based understanding of the person’s development and functioning, not on interventions that might be helpful in working with him/her. The theoretical analysis should be approximately 8-10 pages.

Throughout the paper, provide conceptual and empirical evidence to support your arguments, referencing a minimum of 10 scholarly works, at least 3 of which must be outside materials (i.e., not on the syllabus). The paper should be 12-15 pages in length (not counting references or title page), double-spaced, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Use citation and referencing styles as specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA style).

The evaluation of the paper will be based on whether you addressed all aspects of the assignment (adequate case description; eclectic theoretical analysis from social work perspective; critique of theories; references), the appropriate use of the theoretical concepts you have chosen and the strength of your analysis, the quality of your written work (organization, flow, clarity, grammar, spelling), and the correct application of APA style.

Be sure that your case for or against the philosopher is a good one and can stand up to careful scrutiny. If in doubt about this, use secondary sources. You will be marked down if you only summarise the Lecture Readings and the Lecture notes.

8) If you do use a source in writing your paper, then you must cite it. If you read a secondary source, but don’t adopt any of the ideas in it for your paper, then you don’t need to cite it. You can add it to a list of “Works Consulted” at the end of your paper, but that is up to you. If you use any idea from another person’s writing, you must cite that writing. If you use the actual words of another person, always, we really mean always, put quotation marks around the passage and cite the source. Don’t paraphrase another person’s ideas and pass them off as your own: this is plagiarism, just as much as stealing other people’s words.

9) Use quotations sparingly. Don’t include too many of them in short essays like these one. Two or three, perhaps four, quotations are perfectly fine, as long as they are relevant and not too long. If you include more quotes than this, a significant percentage of your essay becomes made up of other people’s words. Your tutor cannot assign you marks because of words you have merely quoted.

10) You may use any of the standard citation systems. Philosophers are not fussy about this. Make sure that full bibliographical details are included. (Author, publisher, place of publication, year of publication, page numbers). When citing internet sources include the URL and your date of access.

If you get stuck, you may find some of these general references (which are well indexed under both the name of the philosopher and the topic or issue) of use. All are available in hard copy in the Reference section of Bond Library and most are available free online.

The Internet Encyclopaedia of Philosophy http://www.iep.utm.edu/a/ is particularly recommended. It is a professionally refereed and edited work prepared especially with the needs of serious students in mind.

Do NOT rely on Wikipedia. It is not a professionally refereed publication and for that reason is generally unacceptable in university submissions. However if you are stuck it mat be useful in pointing you in the direction of sources which are of an acceptable standard. But do not cite Wikipedia – only the sources to which it directed you (if you make direct use of them).

Also, any Dictionary of Philosophy may be useful.

Essay Marking Criteria

22.5 – 25 Distinction To get this mark, your paper must be well
organised and you must have stuck to the point well. Your paper must be well written and must demonstrate a good understanding of the relevant philosophical view. Beyond this, you would have either (1) done a good job researching beyond the lecture readings to further describe or interpret the philosophical view in question; (2) done a good job researching beyond the lecture readings to present a compelling criticism or defence of the philosophical view; or (3) have presented a criticism or defence that you have thought out for yourself and which is plausible, generally logical and coherent.

25.5 – 30 High Distinction To get this mark, your paper must be well
organised and you must have stuck rigorously to the point. Your paper must be very well written and must demonstrate a very good understanding of the relevant philosophical view. Beyond this, you would have either (1) done an excellent job researching beyond the lecture readings to further describe or interpret the philosophical view in question; (2) done an excellent job researching beyond the lecture readings to present a compelling criticism or defense of the philosophical view; or (3) have presented a criticism or defense that you have thought out for yourself and which is compelling, insightful, logical and coherent.
