Reflective journal custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Assessment #3 – Reflective journal
Purpose

The capacity to reflect is an important element of professional life. It enhances the capacity to evaluate current knowledge and to understand and accept personal weaknesses and strengths.

The journal will encourage and assist students to recognise that ethical decision and preference for ethical action do not necessarily lead to ethical action.

This assignment is designed to develop and assess the capacity for life-long learning (GQ2), commitment to ethical action and social responsibility (GQ5) and the body of knowledge relating to business and society (GQ1).

Description of the assignment

The assignment requires the keeping of a reflective journal comprised of three entries. Each entry will reflect on a specific activity within the course. The journal should not exceed 2000 words in length.

Format

Your answer should be in the form of a reflective journal. A guide to the writing of journals at UniSA is available at http: www.unisa.edu.au/ltu/students/study/assessment/journal.asp.

When submitting the assignment on learnonline the Feedback sheet is to be included and the student is to complete the ‘rubrics’ at the bottom of the Feedback form, indicating his or her own evaluation of the assignment against the assessment criteria. Copies of the feedback sheet in Word format are available on the course website.

Assessment criteria
• Extent to which Journal contains reflecting writing.
• Depth of reflection.
• Ability to convey reflection clearly in written English.
• Development of reflective capacity through the journal writing experience.
Specific information about reflective journal entries

You are required to make three entries in the reflective journal:

1. The first entry in the reflective journal requires you to reflect on the role of activists in achieving social and environmental sustainability. For this entry you may use the following sources as anchors to guide your reflection. They are all available in e-readings.
Swartz, J 2010, ‘Timberland’s CEO on standing up to 65,000 angry activists’, Harvard Business Review, vol. 88, no. 9, pp. 39-43.
Sandhu, S 2010, ‘Shifting paradigms in corporate environmentalism: From poachers to gamekeepers’, Business and Society Review, vol. 115, no. 3, pp. 285-310.

2. The second entry in the journal requires you to reflect on why it is important to think about career planning in your first year at university.
• The experience of filling in the careers workbook will provide a reference point for this reflection entry.
• Chapter 9 of the textbook may also be useful.
3. The third entry in the journal requires you to reflect on the relevance of ethics in your future professional life. For this entry you may use the following source as an anchor to guide your reflection. It is available in the eReadings.

Somerville, M 2009 ‘Past virtues for a future world: Holding our humanness on trust’, chapter 3 in The Ethical Imagination: Journeys of the human spirit, McGill-Queen’s University Press, Montreal.

Resources and activities

Relevant elements of the textbook include (but are not limited to) chapters 3, 5, 7 and 9.

There will be exercises in class to assist students in understanding the concept of reflection and to provide an opportunity to practise reflective writing. This will occur before the first entry is due.

The Learning and Teaching Uni has a number of resources specifically addressing the practice of reflection, as well as an item on reflective journals in its Assessment study guide series.

Due date and extensions

The assignment must be submitted through learnonline. The completed assignment is due at 11:45pm Adelaide time on Sunday 3 June.

Extensions will not normally be granted. Exceptions will be made for personal illness supported by medical certificates and for significant, unexpected and unforeseeable personal and family events. All extensions are at the absolute discretion of the tutor for the tutorial group in which the student is enrolled.

There is no obligation to accept late submissions where no prior arrangement as been made. There is no commitment to return late assignments within two weeks of submission. For late assignments there will be a deduction of one mark for each day that passes between the due date and the submission of the assignment. late penalties will not apply to assignments for which an extension has been granted provided that the assignment is submitted by the extended submission date.

It is anticipated that the assignment will be returned to students within two or three weeks of the submission date. An effort will be mnade to return this assignment befoire the exam, but this is not guaranteed.

Feedback

Feedback on this assignment will be provided on the Feedback form.

Plagiarism and referencing

A journal is a record of the writer’s thoughts about individual learning and experience. As such, one might expect that there will be little need for the inclusion of references and citations. There are two exceptions. Where the journal entry refers to a specific event – a TV interview, or an item discussed on the web for instance – there needs to be a reference to allow that item to be found. If the reflection uses material written by others then it must be clear which parts are written by the student and which parts are written by others. Quite clearly, if your journal, or any large part of it, is copied without acknowledgement from another source this is unaceptable.
The feedback forms for this assessment are located at:http://learn.unisa.edu.au/file.php?file=/fbf/105458/assessment_3_feedback_12.doc
