Based on a careful review of the readings in the classroom and the textbook, respond to
ALL the following questions:

Each of the next four questions should require some careful thinking and assessing.
1. Performance information:
a. The Play: �Death of a Salesman,� Arthur Miller, 1949
b. The Film: the director�s name, the production company, the date it was produced, the media it was filmed for (film, video, broadcast TV, cable TV), and how you viewed it (streaming, CD, tape, theatre)
2. Describe the opening scene of the film. How did the film capture your attention, prepare you for the style and tone of the story, and introduce the central characters and conflict? Did the opening scene differ from the play script? If so, how?
3. Discuss the timeline of the play. Use Cohen’s Horizontal Axis in Chapter 2 and specific examples from the script and film.
a. The Exposition – When does this happen? Did you understand all that you needed to follow the story?
b. The Conflict – What was the central conflict in the play? How and when does the play introduce this to the audience?
c. The Climax – What happens to bring the play to this moment? How is it resolved?
d. The Denoument – Do the characters say or do anything to bring the
performance to a close after the climax? What is it and did it affect your
understanding of what had happened?
4. The film vs. the script:
a. Did you feel the film was faithful to the script? Was the dialogue the
same? Did it adhere to the timeline of the play? Did you think the
differences made the story or characters more or less interesting or clear?

2. When a Director chooses to create a production of a particular play she is in charge with what is called the “artistic vision’ of the production. One element of this is to decide what is important about the play – why is it being done? What kind of message or lesson will this play teach the audience? What do you think the message was for this film? What moments in the film stood out as being crucial to conveying the director’s “vision”.
3. Part of the “artistic vision” is to see that it is implemented across all areas of the acting and design of the production. This means that if the play is set in rural America in 1931, the physical characteristics of the stage decor should reinforce that location. Did the design elements fit together? Did they create a “world” in which the play could take place? Was anything out of place? How did the design elements support each other? Did the actors fit in to the world?
4. In the theatre, the director is responsible for what we call staging the play. This refers to sorting out how the actors are arranged on stage at any given moment and how they move from place to place. This helps the audience decide whom to watch at any moment. In a film, much of this is done through the camera. The location of the camera and the focus can emphasize an actor when needed. Were there places during the film where the director created a particularly striking or interesting picture or focus? Try and describe them. Were they helpful to your understanding of the story or character relationships?
