Dear Abby Case Study custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Write up your Case Study Analysis (500-600 words), following APA format (including a properly formatted bibliography and in-text citations). Be sure to cover all of the elements described below.

Case Study #4: “Dear Abby”
The following case was an entry in a Dear Abby column on March 30, 1988:
When I was twenty I had an abortion. Seven years later, when I was pregnant with my first child, my doctor asked if this was my first pregnancy, so I told him about the abortion. At one of my early prenatal visits, his nurse walked into the examining room, looked me straight in the eye, and said, “So, you’ve decided to keep this one?”…Never again will I disclose this information on my medical history.
Questions to address in your analysis:
1. Was what the nurse did illegal?
2. Was it unethical?
3. Who is at fault for this incident? The patient, the physician, or the nurse?

Case Study #5
“Medical Record”
Beverly Woodward, a physician who chose to give birth at a hospital she worked at—found out upon her discharge that ten of her colleagues had looked up her medical record on the hospital’s computer system, eager to check on the status of mother and baby. She had an extensive medical record, and was appalled to realize her colleagues had instant access to everything in it.
Questions to address in your analysis:
1. Should these colleagues have access to these medical records? Why or why not?
2. Is what they did legal?
3. Would medical records be safer if they were on paper only and were not available on a computer?

Summary
– Include key people and elements of the Case Study that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the issues and topics presented.
Analysis
– Present an insightful and thorough analysis of all issues identified in the summary. Sometimes I may include questions to answer within this section to help guide you. This section should make appropriate connections between the issues identified in the Summary and the concepts studied in the reading
Recommendation
– Provide a recommendation on how the Case Study should be resolved. Be sure to supports your recommendation and opinions with strong arguments and evidence from the textbook. Your recommendation should demonstrate a balanced and critical view of the problem and present a detailed, realistic, and appropriate recommendation on what action should be taken. Be sure that your ideas are clearly supported by the information presented throughout the course and/or concepts from the reading.
– Be sure to use the framework for ethical decision making to arrive at your recommendation. (found in the supplemental reading from Week #3)

law custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

this is the reading material for this paper.

Rancher Chelsea buys a house with her husband, Captain Butthead. They are tenants in common. The loan is in his name but the property is in both their names. The house is a modular and sits on 5 acres. There are no improvements. Rancher Chelsea is a very industrious cuss and builds a barn, shedrow, and garage. Rancher Chelsea is in a VERY bad marriage situation and Captain Butthead goes and gets her paychecks every payday from her job at Vail the Monstrosity. This would normally be unacceptable but Captain Butthead is a police officer and no one questions the legality. They all love Captain Butthead at Rancher Chelsea’s work because he brings in all his cop buddies to the restaurant on the property and makes everyone feel super safe.

Rancher Chelsea, ever industrious, figures out that in certain circumstances she can make extra money, like waiting tables, hauling luggage, parking cars, etc., so she always offers to help out in these positions – not only does it get some cash that Captain Butthead knows nothing about, but it also helps her to learn more about the resort industry and running a hotel. (Rancher Chelsea is a Security Guard after quitting the police department but eventually becomes Assistant Director of Resort Operations). After a period of years, Rancher Chelsea has saved up enough money to buy the two lots surrounding her house, first one and then the other, over the course of a year, (The money was deposited in a super secret CD with a pretty decent interest rate) because she has horses and knows the only way she can escape Captain Butthead and keep them is by purchasing her own property. Rancher Chelsea buys the two lots, but only one of them is just in her name – the other is in her father’s and hers (the one she bought second). Captain Butthead finds out about the first lot because the county does something stupid, and initially goes completely nuts, but then, unbeknownst to Rancher Chelsea, starts negotiating with the mortgage company to get a home equity loan, using this new lot as collateral. Rancher Chelsea has, in the meantime, fenced the property. The property lines are still intact, leaving the property as two separate lots.

Captain Butthead happens to be sleeping with the lady from the title company, which Rancher Chelsea is vaguely aware of because her step-son is best friends with Title Lady’s son. Rancher Chelsea chooses to ignore this and plots Captain Butthead’s demise instead as a better use of her mental capacities. Captain Butthead gets home equity loan for $ 75,000, still unknown to Rancher Chelsea, and signs all documentation with Title Lady as notary – even the parts where Rancher Chelsea was supposed to sign, in other words, forged the documents. Rancher Chelsea knows nothing about this until she gets a new job, grows some cojones and files for divorce.

Captain Butthead lied about it on the financials, but the mortgage company put a little notice on the door saying the property had been foreclosed on and needs to be vacated in 30 days, and somebody finally took pity on Rancher Chelsea at the mortgage company (because the account was not in Rancher Chelsea’s name so she could not get any info AND mortgage company would not take Rancher Chelsea’s mortgage payments) and faxed her the documents. Apparently Captain Butthead did not pay the mortgage for quite some time, a fact that Rancher Chelsea was unaware of until it was too late. In the meantime Captain Butthead has fled the state with his newest girlfriend, the wife of his best friend, using a credit card that Rancher Chelsea knew nothing about but had her as a signer of the account, making her financially responsible, in a truck that Rancher Chelsea was a co-signer on that was later abandoned in the desert. Captain Butthead left his two minor children with Rancher Chelsea because their natural mother was living in another state and in and out of rehab. (FYI Captain Butthead married that girl about two years later and she divorced him a few years after that and took him to the cleaners…)

When the modular and the initial 5 acres was foreclosed on, Rancher Chelsea also lost her 5 acres for which the documents had been forged since there was a home equity loan using the land as collateral. Rancher Chelsea argued with the mortgage company, but since her name was not on the loan they refused to talk to her. Rancher Chelsea could not afford an attorney, and her hair started to fall out from the stress. Rancher Chelsea tried to get things changed on the deed, and filed liens and quitclaims, but she had no idea what she was doing and nothing worked. Finally Rancher Chelsea gave up because fighting was costing more than the land did.

The question is – how did the mortgage company, the title company, and Captain Butthead get away with all this? What is the state of the deed now? Who owns what??? Are any of the mortgages/DOTs effective against Rancher Chelsea? What’s going on here? Who can put the pieces of the puzzle together . . . .

Optical Fibre Transmission Laboratory custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Optical Fibre Transmission Laboratory
1 Introduction
1.2 Background
This laboratory is designed to demonstrate practically a few of the things that have been discussed in lectures. In particular, it concerns the characteristics of optical fibre systems and the determination of the limitations in their performance.
The basic measurements carried out in the laboratory form the basis of calculations that allow estimation of performance. Given the constraints of academic budgets, the equipment operates in the 800nm wavelength window with graded index fibre rather than in the commercial communications windows around 1300nm and 1550nm using single mode fibre.
1.3 Equipment
• HFBR-1414 transmitter LED module.
• Graded index 62.5ìm core diameter silica multimode fibres (NA 0.275 and effective group refractive index 1.497).
• 1m graded index 62.5ìm core diameter silica multimode fibre patchcords.
• Silicon pin photodiode type HFD3065-002/XBA.
• Waveform generator.
• Two channel laboratory oscilloscope.
• Resistors.
• Laboratory power supply.
Page 1 of 5 OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
The University of Warwick
2 Transmitter Design
The transmitter and receiver are mounted on a printed circuit board, so that the choice to be made is the value of the resistors to be used. The transmitter circuit is shown in Figure 1 below. Refer to the datasheet for the transmitter module and choose as suitable resistor. R13 HFBR-14122,6,7
Figure 1: LED Module Driver Circuit
3 Receiver Design
The level of power transmitted through the fibres in this laboratory is great enough for a resistive load to suffice, as shown in Figure 2. Empirically determine a suitable load resistance value and connect it. RLHFD3065-002/XBA +5V Vo C1C2
Figure 2: Simple Resistive Load Receiver Page 2 of 5 OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
The University of Warwick
4 Measurements
4.2 System Test
Ensure that your system is working by sending a square wave (from the 50Ù signal generator output) with a frequency of a few kHz, making any adjustments necessary before proceeding to the next part.
4.3 Attenuation and Delay with Distance
Record the maximum amplitude of received signal, and its delay relative to the input signal using the 1m patchcord. Repeat these measurements for the two fibre reels.
4.4 Estimation of Receiver Noise
Estimate the rms receiver noise amplitude by examining the receiver output for no incident light.
Practical Note: For noise estimation purposes the rms noise voltage is very approximately one fifth of the amplitude of bright band noise observed on an oscilloscope trace.
Page 3 of 5 OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
The University of Warwick
Questions and Points for Discussion in the Write-Up
The weightings of the various elements are shown in brackets. There is a difference in assignment weightings between the MSc module and the 4th Year module.
MSc students should produce a report addressing all questions.
Fourth Year MEng students should produce concise answers to parts 2, 3 and 5.
1. Discuss the design of your circuits, explaining why you chose the particular resistor values used and the purpose of the capacitors C1 and C2. [10%]
2. Determine the length of the two optical fibres [10%]
3. Find the attenuation per km of the optical fibre reels. [10%]
4. Estimate the received power at your receiver. [10%]
5. Using the noise level results and the fibre attenuation per km measured earlier, calculate the attenuation limited distance for a communication system using the LED transmitter. [20%]
6. Describe the major sources of error in your experiment. [10%]
7. Discuss the differences expected between the basic system that you have constructed and commercial single-mode fibre systems operating in the 1300nm and 1550 nm windows. [30%]
Page 4 of 5 OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
The University of Warwick
Appendix: Attenuation Limited Distance
For the fibres used in the laboratory a BER of 10-9 is used as the maximum acceptable. 91022erfc21.=……..SNR (A.1)
Solving this numerically (e.g. using MATLAB) we get a value of 12=SNR
The attenuation in the fibre, after a distance L and attenuation coefficient á, is
)exp(Lá. (A.2)
To maintain the required BER, the minimum received power, Pmin, must not fall below 12 times the rms noise voltage. Hence we can say that the maximum length is given by ……..=min10maxlog101PPLiná (A.3)
where Pin is the input power. Alternatively, since the optical power is proportional to the voltage out of the receiver ……..=min10maxlog101VVLiná (A.4)
where Vin is the voltage signal generated in the receiver when it is connected to the transmitter via the patchcord and Vmin is 12 times the rms noise voltage.
