Our first paper assignment involves closer analysis of several pieces we have studied in class, as well as applying our knowledge of Romantic style to a “new” piece.
While you may refer to our course textbooks to answer these questions, I expect your answers to be stated in your own words. If ANY of the writing in your paper (even a single sentence) is copied from a textbook or the Internet, you will receive a failing grade for the assignment.
Beethoven, Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major (first movement).
1. In what ways does this piece embody Beethoven’s “heroic” style? Cite specific musical examples in your answer, and include a consideration of the piece’s sonata form.
2. Discuss the idea of “protagonist” and “antagonist” themes. Where do these themes appear? How are they developed over the course of the movement?
3. Now, turn to our source readings about Beethoven and answer these questions:
a. #93, “Beethoven’s Heiligenstadt Testament”: How might the sentiments in this testament be applicable to the Eroica Symphony?
b. #95, “The First Reactions to Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ Symphony”: What about these reactions do you either agree or disagree with?
Berlioz, Symphonie fantastique (fifth movement).
1. Identify three examples of unusual or striking things Berlioz does with the orchestra.
2. In each case, what effect is created? Does this effect seem to correspond to the program? (Go beyond the actual program—what do you notice by listening and reading the score?)
3. Concert-goers would have been given a program to accompany their listening for this piece. Do you think such a program is necessary for understanding the music? Why or why not?
Chopin, Nocturne in D-flat Major, Op. 27, No. 2 and Liszt, Trois etudes de concert, No. 3, “Un sospiro.”
1. What do you think are the important similarities and differences between these pieces?
2. What is “nocturnal” about Chopin’s nocturne?
3. What makes Liszt’s piece an etude, or study piece?
Schubert, Erlkönig (score and text can be found on Blackboard)
Based on the analysis of other Schubert songs we did in class, answer the following questions:
1. How are different characters in the story represented musically?
2. What roles do the vocal melody and piano accompaniment each play?
3. In what other ways does Schubert use music to reflect the text?
An A-level paper will do the following:
a.Provide concise but insightful analytical commentary
b. Answer all the required questions carefully and thoughtfully
c. Be clearly organized, use good grammar, and employ a clear writing style
Papers that fall short in one or more of these areas will earn lower grades.
Please use simple sentence to write it. And please do not copy. Thank you very much!
