Have you ever questioned the results or conclusions of a research article? Reading an article with a critical eye helps hone your critical thinking skills. You should not be satisfied with reading just the abstract and the discussion section; the methods and results sections are just as important. These sections should address how participants were recruited and how informed consent was obtained, particularly with vulnerable populations. If the article included assessment instruments, their reliability and validity should be included. The results should follow from the goals and hypotheses of the study. The discussion section generalizes the results but the author should be cautious to note limitations of the study to avoid overgeneralization (i.e., applying results from a small group to a large population).
Developmental psychology research often involves diverse individuals, varying in age, culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, etc. When working with diverse populations, you must be cautious of ethical issues that may arise. Think about ethical issues that may arise when conducting developmental research involving a child with a learning disability or an adult with developmental delays. Consider the extra precautions you must take as a researcher of developmental psychology when working with diverse populations.
With these thoughts in mind:
Write about two attributes that you think are most important to being a critical reader/consumer of developmental psychology research and explain why each is important. Then describe two major ethical issues related to conducting research in developmental psychology within a specific culture and/or population. Explain the challenges that may occur if these issues are not taken into consideration.
