California’s prison and jail population continues to climb and are overcrowded custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Background:

California’s prison and jail population continues to climb and are overcrowded.

The U.S. Supreme Court told California to reduce the prison population because of overcrowding in violation of the Eighth Amendment in the case of Brown v. Plata,

The overcrowding crisis gets worse with each passing day, creating an emergency in the California prison system. In response to the Supreme Court ruling, Governor Brown is asking for the release of 40,000 prison inmates and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is releasing inmates early from Los Angeles County Jails to cover a $400 million deficit.

As a solution to the increasing prison population and budget deficit, former Governor Schwarzenegger wanted to release some inmates and send other inmates to private prisons in Arizona and other nearby states. Governor Brown has not yet made a commitment on the two issues on overcrowded conditions but pressure is now on Sheriff Baca to release non-violent inmates back into society, in your opinion, what should we do?

In a well-organized three-paragraph essay, offer your suggestion to the problem of increasing jail and prison populations during a time of a deficit budget.

Question:

After reading about rising prison populations and increased costs of running a prison during a budget crisis in Chapter 12, Jails and Prisons, and reviewing the postings in Module 12 on California Prison Doors Opened Due to Budget Crisis and California prisoners clearing out:

What is your suggestion on how to handle the problem of “overcrowded prisons” at a time when people are demanding longer sentences for violent offenders and the U.S. Supreme Court has ordered California to reduce the prison population?

TOPIC FOR WEEK 10, Sexual Predators and Sentencing

Go to the Modules, Week 11, and read the posting on Sexual Predators.

Background: Go to Module 10 and read the posting on Sexual predators and Sentencing

The Rodney James Alcala and the John Albert Gardner cases are not the only criminals in the news today about a convicted rapist/child molester freed from custody and then killing again:

Rodney James Alcala sentenced to death for the rape and murder of five girls.
John Albert Gardner sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of two girls.

After reading the information in the Module 10, take time to plan and organize your response before you begin to write. Be sure and define your terms as you write your response using your own words and not use the words of others unless you properly cite/footnote their writings. Be careful not to plagiarize or use the words of other people without proper citations.

Your Discussion Question has two parts:

Both of these offenders are violent men.

1. In your own words, does parole work for sex offenders?

2. Do you agree with the sentences given to (explain why you think so):

a. Rodney James Alcala sentenced to death for the rape and murder of five girls.

b. John Albert Gardner sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder of two girls.

Assignment 3

The assignments are individual assignments, and all students are required to attempt each
assignment.

When doing your assignments please number your answers, so that the respective question
can be easily identified. If appropriate, do not only give numerical answers, but show the
steps and formulas you have used for your calculations.

Please leave margins all around the paper.

Develop a research plan to be submitted for a grant application.

Research Topic: “Risk behaviours (e.g. drug injection, men having sex with men, or similar) and sexually transmitted infection or blood borne viruses in a male prison population”.
The number of marks allocated to each part of the task is noted throughout the assignment.

Task: Write a maximum of five (5) pages of your research plan which should include details on the following topics as appropriate to your chosen study design:

1. Background information & literature review (i.e. write a small literature review, including not
more than eight (8) previously published articles). (2 marks)

2. Operational research hypothesis (i.e. Write down in precise and falsifiable terms your
research hypothesis; include definitions of the study factor and the outcome). (3 marks)

3. The study design (i.e. choose the study design that is most appropriate to address your
research hypothesis; justify your choice by comparing it to other possible designs). (3
marks)

4. Target population (i.e. Define the target population in detail). (2 marks)

5. Sampling process and recruitment strategies (i.e. explain in detail how you plan to sample
from your target population). (3 marks)

6. Data collection method(s) (i.e. explain in detail how you plan to assess study factor and
outcome. How do you plan to assess other characteristics involved, such as confounders?
Are there any follow-up procedures?) (2 marks)

7. Timeframe (i.e. List the specific activities to be undertaken, with specific time frames. This
should include any prior and subsequent parts of the research if applicable) (1 mark)

8. Ethical considerations (i.e. provide a brief statement regarding the ethical implications of
the research). (1 mark)

9. Potential bias (i.e. Discuss potential biases occurring in your study and how you plan to
control them; you can refer to previously outlined design issues). (3 marks)

Planned statistical analysis, sample size calculation, budget, and administration issues need not be covered in your research plan!

However, you should be realistic! For example, assume that you are writing a grant application for NHMRC. NHMRC will fund projects for up to three years and only in exceptional circumstances that need special justification, up to five years. The budget is not limited, but it is certainly very difficult to receive more than $100,000 per year. (Note that NHMRC applications allow 9 pages in total, plus 2 pages references).

14
Formatting of your third assignment:
? minimum font size 12 (any font you like)
? minimum line spacing 1.5
? minimum margins 2.5 cm at top, bottom, left and right
? maximum of eight (8) references
? maximum of five (5) pages of research plan (excludes cover page and reference page)
? include student number either on cover page or in header of assignment

If the assignment is outside these parameters then any content exceeding the limits will be
disregarded.

Fantasy and Children’s Literature custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

There are no strict guidelines as to the length of your response, but you may want to strive for a word count of anywhere between 300-500 words per response.

1.Fantasy and Children’s Literature

Identify and discuss three distinct functions of fantasy in children’s literature. Develop your arguments by considering why fantastical elements have a pervasive presence in children’s literature and/or why fantasy is often attached to childhood. Use textual evidence to support your arguments. Each function you discuss must refer to at least one of the texts listed below; your entire response must thus use textual evidence from at least three of the following texts:

Burningham, Come Away from the Water, Shirley.Clifford, “The New Mother.”
Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Pilkey, The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby.
Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are.
Selick, Coraline (film version).
Wiesner, Flotsam.

2.Children’s Literature and the College Classroom

Over the past two decades, children’s literature scholarship has developed into a vibrant field of study. Part of this development includes the growing number of college-level courses devoted to the critical study of children’s literature.

Offer an argument as to why the study of children’s literature in the college classroom is useful and relevant. What benefits can be gained from the critical examination of texts written for and read by children? As you develop your argument/s, consider some of the challenges/problems we may face when using/discussing children’s books in a college setting. How can we address such challenges?

PLease use about 400 words per question.

The Descendants custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

1.View The Descendants movie.
2.There will be discussions to help you brainstorm ideas about what makes a dramedy The Descendants fulfills (or doesn’t fulfill) those ideas.
3.Develop a thesis that defines dramedy and argues whether or not The Descendants fulfills (or not) your definition. Your essay should then illustrate your definition (positively or negatively) using examples and specific detail from the film. You can achieve this in a number of ways:
a. You may develop one overarching requirement for dramedy and discuss a number of examples from the film.
b. You may develop a few requirements for dramedy and discuss one example from the film for each.
c. You may focus on one element of a dramedy, such as character, and use examples from the film.
d. You may use any other plan of development as long as it fulfills the assignment.
You have the opportunity to send me an outline of your final draft if you wish to do so. It should use the following format (this is a sample from a literary analysis assignment):
Thesis: “The Lottery” teaches its readers to question tradition by exposing the inadequacy of our symbols.
Topic Sentence 1: The black box symbolizes the aging of a tradition within a society.
Topic Sentence 2: Old Man Warner represents the perspective of those within a society that buy into meaningless traditions.
Topic Sentence 3: Tessie Hutchinson represents the perspective of those within a society who object to traditions in such a way that makes them part of the problem rather than the solution.
4. Write a well-developed, multi-paragraphed essay. Make sure you
a. Introduce the genre of dramedy and Little Miss Sunshine or The Descendants.
b. Include a clear, concise thesis statement that fulfills the assignment.
c. Use specific detail from the film.
d. Analyze film content. You must go beyond summary.

Other Tips:

1. Think about your audience, your professor. She is already familiar with Little Miss Sunshine or The Descendants and does not need summary.
2. Do not use first person (I, We).
3. Be very careful with the use of second person (you). Avoid it if you can. If you can’t, be sure your meaning is clear and not asking too much of the reader.
4. You are using a source as the basis of your essay, so it must be documented.
o Be sure to establish the title of the film early in your essay.
o Anytime you use a character’s words, put them in quotation marks and indicate who they belong to by using a signal phrase:
§ Richard says, “Everybody just pretend to be normal.”
o You’ll need a works cited page.
§ Directions for formatting a works cited page and crafting works cited entries can be found here: https://bcs.bedfordstmartins.com/resdoc5e/RES5e_ch08_s1-0011.html
