Writing Project 2: Making an Argument about Digital Engagement
One-sentence overview: Use research and analysis to make an argument about a specific digital tool?s role in political, intellectual, or creative engagement.
Description & Goals:
In your first writing project, you analyzed a specific online ?context? (a social networking site) in order to determine its specific effects on communication. In your second project, you?ll combine several types of research on a specific digital tool (either a unique tool or specific example(s) of a more generic tool) and make an argument about how that tool relates to the way(s) users engage in creative activities, intellectual pursuits, or political activism. The more specific your chosen tool is (e.g., a particular example of a wiki or section of a wiki, instead of ?wikis?), the more conducive your topic will be to producing a successful project. You may not use a popular social networking site as your tool (i.e., Facebook and Twitter are ineligible).
You will present your analytical argument as a web page constructed through Weebly.com. Weebly pages are very easy to create, and we?ll go over some of the basics in class, so don?t worry too much about the actual job of creating a website just yet. However, there will be some important aspects of writing that are a little bit different on a webpage than they are in an academic paper. Some of these are reflected in the criteria, and we will discuss this in more detail over the next few class periods.
The best projects will clearly articulate the tool?s role in engagement, while acknowledging that the tool isn?t the only factor involved. This means that you focus on how the tool helps people reach a goal or pursue a common interest, but you don?t need to try to convince your readers that the tool is some magical gift from the technology gods that improves the lives of everyone who touches it. This is a way of addressing the complexity of your topic.
Below are some questions you might consider in developing a topic (this is not a list of questions to answer in the paper, but a set of questions that might help you think about ways of discussing your topic.):
? What is the role of the tool, and how does it relate to the role of the individuals or groups who use it? (In other words: What do people use the tool for? What kinds of people use it?)
? What kind of engagement is occurring with this tool?
? What purpose or goal are users trying to reach, and how does this tool help them do so?
? What makes this engagement different from older examples of engagement (with different tools, for example). Is it a difference in scale? In level of participation or interactivity? In speed? To use Shirky?s terms: is it a difference in means, motive, or opportunity? (This is not an exhaustive list, of course; it might be something else, or a combination of more than one factor.)
? What effects are occurring as a result of the way users employ this tool? (Note that the tool doesn?t have to be the cause of whatever effect you observe; it can have a more subtle role in the engagement occurring around it.)

The short answer is that lots of things count as tools. The hard part isn?t finding a tool, it?s understanding how something might work as a tool. The following two definitions of tool are most applicable to our project.

So, talking about something as a tool is, in part, a matter of how it is framed. Some online or digital tools could be framed as ?contexts? (like social networking sites were for the first project; SNSs can also be tools for communicating and connecting with others, for marketing, etc.) or ? things? (like the book cover in the definition above; it?s not just a marketing tool, it?s an object with specific qualities), in addition to ?tools.? What?s most important is that you are discussing your topic as a tool, regardless of the other possible ways to conceptualize it.
For your project 2, you need to know that you?v e chosen a tool that somehow affects users? political, intellectual, or creative engagement. For example, there are several ways that a tool could affect its users? political engagement. It might help them become involved in politics. It might help them learn about politics. It might keep them interested in politics. It might decrease their interest, knowledge, or involvement.
The major question you should be answering in your thesis statement is:
How does this tool affect users? [political, intellectual, or creative] engagement?
Things you?l l need for a successful project (grading criteria):
? A clear thesis statement that identifies what you?re analyzing and how you intend to do so.
? The best thesis statements could potentially be proven wrong. The point of your analytical argument, then, is to show readers (convince them through your analysis) that you?re right.
? In a well-structured project, your thesis will alert readers to both your overall topic and the specific sub-claims that you will develop (individually) in order to ?prove? your thesis.
? Developed, sustained analysis. You?ll need to somehow break your topic down (in this case, your argument) into its component parts (your sub-claims), analyze those parts in detail, and explain their relationship to the whole (again, your thesis/argument is the ?whole?).
? Make sure that you clearly explain the relationship between each part (i.e., between all of your sub-claims).
? Be sure, also, to clearly explain the relationship between each part (sub-claim) and the whole (your thesis).
? Evidence: your evidence will come from two places.
? Our readings for class: you must specifically include quotations and concepts from the books we?ve read this unit (YouTube and Cognitive Surplus)
? Your specific paper topic (examples of the ?tool? that you are making an argument about)
? Clear Organization.
? For this particular project, clear organization will mean attention to the way your readers move through the material. This includes some kind of introductory page or guide to the material, as well as a clear, logical way for users to move from one page to another (i.e. clear layout and links). You should not include the entire project on one page. Instead, think about how to effectively break up the material and arrange it on your webpage.
? Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling: Exhibit relative freedom from error.
? Clearly cited sources (including a works cited page).

o Attention to presentation, including sectioning off information and creating a layout that is presentable and not too difficult to navigate

? Ways use your words efficiently:
? Avoid quoting secondary research outside of the 2 books. (There?s no room for it!)
? Choose your quotations carefully, so that they are an appropriate length for this project.
? Use images and hyperlinks to supplement your writing.
? Visual elements
o One way to use visuals in a way that supplements your project is to provide screenshots as evidence, so that your description of the tool (or feature of it) that you?re discussing can be more concise.
o Aside from the practical use of visuals to help you make your argument, pay attention to how well your visual choices fit your project. So, if you include images for design and aesthetic purposes, think about how those images fit with your project goals

o Linking to the books you cite (for example, the author?s website or the book?s page on a site like Amazon.com) is a common convention in online writing. You are welcome to do this. However, because links can change, because our purposes are academic, and because one of the goals in an FSE course is for you to learn how to use a system of documentation, you?ll need a works cited page no matter what. Your works cited page should clearly listed just like the other pages on your site, and it should follow the conventions of MLA formatting. The only exceptions I?m aware of are that you may not be able to double space or add a hanging indent to your entries; everything else should be possible on your Weebly page.
