Researching a Foreign Country Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Your homework is to research a foreign country, preferably one in the Middle East, or Latin America and Asia, or Central Europe, etc.
Please find two newspaper articles. At this time, I am going to have you look up the resources on your own. As we progress through the year, I will direct you to more useful/accurate sites. For now, I just want you to see what is out there. Please try to find something RECENT.
Please find two articles, one has to be about a positive occurrence in that country, and the other should be about something neutral, or negative. Please write a summary of both articles and reflect on it. What do you think? Tell me your thoughts. Is this a country you would like to visit someday? How is what is happening in this country similar (or vastly different) to what is going on in our country?
Please write at least 10-12 eloquent sentences.
I will collect this on Tuesday. If you know of a student who has not received this e-mail, please be sure to forward it to them.

A Case for Growth: Apps by Design, LLC was a huge success within the first year of existence Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Three years had elapsed since Kristin, former Senior Vice President for MBI Corporation, made the decision to make the switch from working as a senior executive in a corporate giant to working with her long time-friend and former college roommate, Becky, in a start-up small business focusing on designing mobile applications. What had started as negotiations between Becky and Kristin to establish an employer-employee relationship wherein Kristin would work for Becky, quickly turned into serious discussions of shared ownership of Beckys company, Apps by Design, LLC. Shortly thereafter, Becky and Kristin field for S-Corp status. Becky retained majority ownership with 51% of the company. No other owners were brought into the company.
Apps by Design, LLC was a huge success within the first year of existence. Beckys expertise as a mobile applications designer combined with Kristins contacts in the Information Technology in both the private and government sector resulted in great profits for the company in year 1 and even greater profits in year 2. The company was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the Ten Fastest Growing Companies in 2010, and both Becky and Kristin were designated as among the Top 10 Female Executives for 2010. Apps by Design had, in 2 short years, become a major force in the mobile applications industry. A number of major large businesses firms and potential investors approached Apps by Design displaying serious interest in buying the fledgling company. Becky and Kristin graciously reviewed the offers received, but turned down each as the company embarked on 2011.
When Becky and Kristin sat down and performed a formal review of their success for 2011, realized that they had before them an opportunity to grow the business of Apps by Design far beyond their wildest dreams. They knew that the window of opportunity would remain open for only a brief period before attacks on the company would be made by their competitors.
During their review, Becky and Kristin each drew up a list of factors that believed to be instrumental in the great success. They had performed reviews of the state of Apps by Design every six months since the company was created. Both Beck and Kristin recognized the value of the reviews and pledged to continue them at six-month intervals until such time as the need was for greater frequency or less frequency. When combined, their lists were relatively short but contained a number of factors studied while in college business courses, factors they are have declared to be absolute must-haves irrespective of what the future holds for Apps by Design. The list contained the following factors:
Frequent revisiting of the Apps by Design Business Plan accompanied by minor adjustments when necessary.
Willingness by both Becky and Kristin to accept risk after careful analysis and determination that the returns were worth the risk.
Foresight to establish an Apps by Design Innovations Group whose sole purpose was to generate new ideas and technologies and to reinvent the company on a regular basis.
An unrelenting commitment to methodically recruit, train, and retain quality employees to form the Apps by Design workforce into their corporate culture of employee involvement.
Judicious expenditure of company resources to ensure a strong but flexible infrastructure.
Rigid adherence to an Apps by Design Code of Ethics
Their ability to know and respect their respective strengths and weaknesses when it came to matters of obtaining professional help.
Prudent use of the network contacts Kristin had established while working for MBI Corporation.

Becky and Kristin knew the time had come to grow the business. There were a number of questions that needed to be addressed.
How should the business be grown? Can we do it ourselves using a company-owned approach? What about a joint venture with one of the investors who had approached Apps by Design? What about franchising? All could be considered as potential options.
What did they hope to accomplish? What were their goals?

Becky and Kristin agreed that they needed professional help in terms of guiding them through the growth process by assisting in the analysis of the data, protecting Apps by design in its current state, assisting in the due diligence of seeking additional partners or investors, and generally acting the voice of reason as Becky and Kristin pondered the numerous decisions ahead of them. They hired an outside consultant whose reputation for helping highly successful companies grow. His first task was to collaboratively build with Becky and Kristin was to establish an initial set of goals/objectives (an end state or situation they wanted to the company to be in at certain milestones (the end of every year for the next five years). The goals/objectives list included:
Assurance that in the event something happened to the other (death, resignation, etc.), the company would continue on without interruption with the survivor at the head of the company
A total commitment to compliance with requirements for earth-friendly business operations
Financial growth at the cumulative rate of 100% in year 1; 50% each in years 2 and 3; 25% in year 4 and steady state in year5.
Establishment by the end of year 3 an endowment to Becky and Kristins Alma Mater, Stanford University, for the creation of a scholarship fund for young men and women who exhibited exceptional creativity, innovation, and vision in the field of mobile application development. The scholarship includes an apprenticeship with Apps by Design during the summer months and the promise of employment with the company following graduation.
The ability to borrow money when necessary for infrastructure and research and development as needed. Preferably, use the cash of others and avoid depleting current assets.
100% of the work created by the growth plan will be on-shore, as has been the case since the company was originally formed.
At the end of year 3, only 50% of the companys revenues will come from mobile applications design.
To retain as much flexibility as possible to make decisions quickly and efficiently without getting bogged down in bureaucracy.
To minimize risk where possible but not at the expense of loss of flexibility.

Source #1
a. tell-show-do technique

b. While researching my topic I learned an important communication technique known as the “tell-show-do technique”. On the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Web site, I found a 2011 article entitled “Guideline on Behavior Guidance for the Pediatric Dental Patient”. The article states that the “tell-show-do is a technique of behavior shaping used by many pediatric professionals. The technique involves verbal explanations of procedures in phrases appropriate to the developmental level of the patient (tell); demonstrations for the patient of the visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile aspects of the procedure in a carefully defined, nonthreatening setting (show); and then, without deviating from the explanation and demonstration, completion of the procedure (do).

Source #2
a. basic communication skills

b. A 2006 article entitled “Engaging Children cooperation in the dental environment“ on the website for the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, emphasized that, in a professional relationship, the clinician (such a pediatric dentist or a member of the pediatric dental staff) should demonstrate three qualities:

1. Congruence-genuineness/honesty with the child;

2. Empathy- The ability to reverse roles and understand the experience from the child’s perspective;

3. Respect- Acceptance of the child and unconditional positive regard”

Source #3
a. immediate positive reinforcement
b. In another article I accessed on February 25th of this year, entitled “Managing the Pediatric Patient”, I learned the communication technique called “immediate positive reinforcement” used as a behavioral management technique. This article was found on the Dental Learning Network’s Web site which provides continuing education for dentists. The article explains the technique by saying “A key component of behavior guidance techniques is immediate positive reinforcement, both verbal and non-verbal, where the child is given positive feedback when they are exhibiting appropriate behaviors. It is very important that even with the extremely anxious, disruptive and uncooperative child, that any positive behavior is immediately rewarded. Learning theory states that behavior that is rewarded increases in frequency, while behavior that is punished or goes unrewarded decreases in frequency. Thus behavior shaping is new behaviors that develop by reinforcing successive approximations to a desired goal. Non-social reinforcers such as toys and stickers can also be used but they should always be given to the child by the dentist at the end of the appointment. The power of verbal praise should not be understated, especially for pre-school children.”

4. Describe how you plan to apply these concepts in your personal or professional life. Be specific and include all of the skills or techniques you listed in #3.

I plan to apply these concepts in my professional life several times a day. I will use reflective listening (congruence, empathy, and respect) to gain a child’s trust and help the child become comfortable while at the dentist. I will use the “tell-show-do” technique to help the child patient better understand the procedure to eliminate any fears or anxieties they may have as well as building a relationship with that child that will enable them to relax and enjoy coming to the dental office. Lastly, I will use the “immediate positive reinforcement” technique by letting the child know that good behavior will be rewarded. By doing so, the child will more than likely want to behave as best they can in order to receive a reward. I plan to use all of these techniques in my professional life not only to make my career easier, but to hopefully make a difference in a child’s life.

5. Create a sample dialogue between two or more people demonstrating the skills or techniques you discussed in III. Identify these concepts by putting the name of skill or technique in parenthesis. Your sample dialogue should demonstrate all three of the skills or techniques you described in your answer for III in this assignment and should involve a minimum of five exchanges between the people involved.

Tommy: I’m going to be extra good!

Dental Professional (during procedure): Tommy, you remember Mr. Thirsty, right (showing Tommy the suction handpiece)? He’s been sitting over here and I think he’s getting really thirsty! We’re going to squirt some water in your mouth. Will you let Mr. Thirsty get a drink? (Tell-show-do, reflective listening)

Tommy: (giggling) Mr. Thirsty wants to drink out of my mouth? That’s silly! Tell Mr. Thirsty he can drink if he wants to!

Dental Professional: Alright, here comes Mr. Thirsty open really wide! (tell-show-do)

Dental Professional: (after procedure). You did a great job, Tommy! You’re such a big boy! The treasure chest is right over there. Let’s go open it up and you can get to pick two surprises out! Thank you for being such a great patient today! We’re looking forward to seeing you again! (Immediate Positive Reinforcement, Reflective Listening)

STARBUCKS: In early 2012, Starbucks began selling its new “Blonde Roast” coffee at Starbucks stores as well as in grocery stores Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Please adhere to the following report and formatting guidelines (points will be deducted if you do not):
• No more than 5 pages of written text (references or bibliography don’t count as part of the 5 page limit)
• Report should be double-spaced, using Times New Roman font (12 point), and 1 inch margins on all sides
• Please number all questions before answering them
• Be sure to CITE all sources and provide all publication information at the end of your assignment. Make sure to adhere to either MLA or APA formatting
• Do not copy and paste text from the Internet. Turnitin will be used to check for plagiarism

Read the attached case “Starbucks- A Paragon of Growth and Employee Benefits Faces Storm Clouds” then answer the following questions.

• In early 2012, Starbucks began selling its new “Blonde Roast” coffee at Starbucks stores as well as in grocery stores. Using some of the databases the business librarian went over in class, conduct some research on the Blonde Roast. Why did Starbucks bother introducing this new coffee? Identify at least 3 different reasons and CITE all of your sources. What segment of coffee drinkers (or non-drinkers) is Starbucks attempting to target with the Blonde Roast and how large is this segment (please be specific)? Based on your research, list at least 3 different ways that Starbucks has promoted the Blonde Roast to encourage trial (cite all sources).

• Several recent surveys have found that Starbucks coffee in blind taste tests is not rated any higher by consumers than McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, and some local coffee houses. Yet, Starbucks continues to command a price premium. Discuss the implications of this statement based on outside research, the case you just read as well as by using any topics and discussions we have covered in class so far.

• Some critics have argued that Starbucks has grown too quickly and has suffered financially as a result. Recently, Starbucks has targeted high growth and expansion in India as a means for achieving greater profits. Using the library databases, conduct some extensive research and then present Starbucks’ growth strategy in India. What challenges does the company face and how has it addressed these challenges? Describe at least 3 different challenges and discuss how Starbucks is addressing those challenges.

• How would you prove that happy employees at Starbucks actually lead to greater sales?
