�Are they stylised presentations of animals, or realistic. Would you recognise them as being a chicken, for example, if you were not encultured to �see� the creature as a chicken by familiarity with such conventions?
�Do the animals represent the child reader in their actions? Do they act like children?
�Are they more like pets in their presentation, and so the child identifies with the main character who interacts with them � like finding a lost pet, for example?
�Are the animals hybrids of human and animal, and what does this signify?
�Do the animals dominate the text by being the main character, and if so, how are they arranged on the page? Are they always the central figure?
�How are they drawn � as a symbolic animal, or as highly individual? Do they represent all of those types of animals?
�Consider the colours used to depict the animal � are they realistic? Do you normally see animals of this colour and shape, and how does this affect the way the reader perceives them? Are they cartoon-like or more like animals from a documentary?
�Why would the writer/illustrator use an animal character rather than a human � child or adult? What effect does this have? Does it teach the child to respect all forms of life, or are they so cartoonish that this is has a literary effect only?
�Does the use of an animal create an allegorical message? If so, what is the allegory?
