Your essay will follow the model of a classical argument, which is detailed on page 45. You will follow this model for this assignment, but please note that this model does not always best fit the structure of an argument, as noted in our text (46). We are using this model so that we can practice writing an argumentative essay that uses specific aspects of argumentation in a specific order. Once we have mastered this order we will write other essays using other forms of structure that will include components of the classical structure that you will have practiced in this essay.

In this essay you will take a stance (a position) on the matter of race-based medicine. Following is the assignment prompt: Should doctors and scientists develop and use race-based medicine? You will need a thesis for this assignment, and your thesis must answer the assignment prompt–the question. Please review the thesis handout, which is in a folder for Week 3 in the Course Materials section of our class.
This topic shapes our lives. Race-based medicine can influence how medicines are created, marketed, and prescribed, and how laws are formed and tested. This subject reaches across the different fields of study represented in our class and, in important ways, determines how healthcare is practiced. The working group on Science, Technology, Ethics and Law (STELA) at UC Berkeley found this topic compelling. THE STELA Website, which you can locate at: < https://nature.berkeley.edu/stela/1student race-based medicine.html >offered a talk in 2007 on the topic, about which STELA noted that:
This event is primarily concerned with bringing a balanced perspective on the arguments that are being made from different corners of the controversy of race-based medicine to students. The event is intended to engage students from a variety of backgrounds and majors. Whether you are a pre-law student wanting to learn about the some of the most cutting edge legal and bioethical issues of our generation, a pre-med student who might one day have to prescribe medication to an individual because of his/her race, or simply someone who is concerned about the way technology is shaping our perspective of humanity and humanness, this is the event that needs your opinion and engagement.
I am not asking you to be an expert on medicine, ethics, social construct, or other fields related to this topic. I am, however, asking you to enter into an ongoing conversation, which is what you often do as a student when writing in any field of study?inside or outside of your major.
For your essay you will need to cite the Troy Duster interview and one of the other two articles for this week?s reading (you will find the articles in a reading folder inside the week 3 folder in Course Materials). I suggest that you first read each article trying to understand the views presented in the articles. A common practice in writing courses, one that I value, encourages students to first read a text with a goal of understanding the author’s argument. A way to test your understanding of an author’s argument is to summarize it. Your summary should be free from bias–your own opinion. Upon subsequent readings you evaluate the merits of the argument. If you begin to evaluate an argument before you can summarize it, you may take a misstep by evaluating your own response to the subject and not the argument put forth by the author or you may misrepresent the author’s argument. This approach to reading has been called "reading with and against the grain," and is commonly referred to as "reading rhetorically" You will do well to print each article so that you can annotate them as you read or copy and paste them into a Word document so that you can annotate them electronically. For your first reading, I suggest reading to determine the writer’s purpose. For your second reading, I suggest annotating the articles, noting such things as important information and questions you have about what you have read. This is a thesis driven essay, and you must support your argument with examples, data, and appeals to authority, which you can find in the articles. You must reference the Duster interview and one of the other articles in your essay, and you may not use other outside sources for this essay. You may use personal experience if it helps you demonstrate a specific aspect of your argument, but you should keep such an example to a minimum.
