Direct and Indirect Victims: The direct victim of a crime is someone who personally experiences physical or psychological harm Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

The direct victim of a crime is someone who personally experiences physical or psychological harm. Crimes often affect not only the direct victims but also the victims’ families, friends, and even their communities. These are the indirect victims. For example, after terrorist attacks or random acts of violence such as school shootings, families, neighborhoods, and communities suffer along with the people who were harmed firsthand. Victims, whether direct or indirect, cope with the aftermath of a crime in a variety of ways depending upon their resources, beliefs, and values. Some may turn to prayer or professional counseling, while others may rely on a support system of friends and family. Other individuals may use negative coping strategies such as turning to drugs, alcohol, or some other negative behavior. In this Application, you examine how crimes affect direct and indirect victims, the needs of direct and indirect victims, and the extent to which the criminal justice system addresses their needs.
To prepare for this assignment:
Review Chapter 1 in your course text, Changing Lenses. Reflect on what it means to victimize or be victimized by another person.
Review Chapter 2 in your course text, Changing Lenses. Consider the victim’s experience during and after the described case, and focus on the importance of meeting victims’ needs to aid the recovery process.
Review both of the following vignettes:
"I fell into this deep, dark hole with no steps"
"We’re having a problem forgiving the judge and the system"
For each vignette, think about the psychological effects of crime on the direct and indirect victims, and the needs associated with those effects.
Consider the extent to which the criminal justice system addresses their needs.
Think about two ways in which the criminal justice system could address their needs.
The assignment (1–2 pages):
Explain the psychological effects of crime on the direct and indirect victims in the vignettes and the needs associated with those effects.
Explain the extent to which the criminal justice system addresses their needs.
Explain at least two ways in which the criminal justice system could address their needs. Be specific and provide examples.

The problems with The STAAR Testing in the state of Texas Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Why it is significant to you and to the education community at large. In this activity, you will use that as a ?jumping off point? to develop the remaining components of the introduction section of your research proposal.

Introduction – A brief description is given of the problem, setting where the problem exists, and where the project will take place.

Nature of the Problem – A ?problem? is an actual situation that is hindering the overall effectiveness of the classroom, school, or organization. The description of the problem may be broad. However, the problem must be supported by documented evidence that the problem exists and the impact it is having on the organization. If the problem is too great, the student may choose to address only some aspect (s) of the problem.

Purpose of the Project – Following the broad statement of the problem the student elects to narrow it down and address only specific aspects of the problem. Once that is decided the purpose of the project is stated clearly and succinctly, such as, ?The purpose of the project is to ?.?

Be careful not to suggest an immediate or pre-conceived solution to the problem in the purpose statement. The intent of a well-written proposal is to design a research process out of which a potential solution or alternative solutions will emerge.

Research Question(s) – The research questions should flow right from the purpose of the project. Review the two documents (Activity Resources) on writing research questions as you draft this portion.

Background and Significance of the Problem – The student should document the problem to demonstrate that it is generally recognized in the field, as well as by the student?s organization. The status of the problem needs to be supported by data and by a preliminary review of the professional literature or expert opinion. From this, major issues or components of the problem are presented. In this section, the student will connect the literature to the status of the problem and to the organization. There needs to be evidence of organizational awareness of the problem as well as support for the project. The student?s role within the organization is discussed in order to substantiate the feasibility of the execution of the project. The significance to the organization should also be discussed. The profile of the organization, writer?s role, description of the target group, and other pertinent general background information is included in this section.

Roles and Responsibilities of the government Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

1. Describe the key roles and responsibilities of the federal government, the state and local governments and private industry.

Federal, state, and local governments along with private industry are all essential to Homeland Security. Kamien quoted the Quadrennial Homeland Security Review of 2010 by mentioning that the homeland security field consist of five broad areas: preventing terrorism and enhancing security, securing and managing our boarders, enforcing and administering our immigration laws, safeguarding and securing cyberspace, and ensuring resilience to disasters” (Kamien, 2012, pp.863). However, these are extremely broad terms and way too large for one agency to manage by itself. Each level of government must take a certain level of responsibility to in these areas as well. There is not a federal agency is going to have all-encompassing knowledge and experience to be able to execute these missions everywhere in the United States. Using the systems thinking approach would be essential to help all levels of government work together to accomplish their individual tasks while keeping successes for the greater good as the ultimate goal. Unfortunately, "Many coordination and implementation complications experienced in homeland security among different levels of government, the private sector, and the public are likely an indication of inadequate systems perspectives." (Kamien, 2012, pp. 865)

2. Describe the roles and interactions that you interpret necessary to address the inherent conflict of having free and open trade while maintain acceptable level of security.

As part of the systems thinking approach, all levels must understand the ultimate goal should be to operate collectively, but with the ironic goal of not realizing that we are functioning as parts of homeland security. In simpler terms, we want to be safe and enjoy a normal life without fear of crime or terrorism – to not have to feel like we need to look over our shoulders. However, to have that safety, we must accept that occasionally we have to look over our shoulders. Furthermore, all stakeholders to be a little more transparent to each other, so we can all operate from the same play book, but not so open as to allow the enemy to get a peak at that same play book. I like using TSA’s enhanced security measures as an example for this subject. These new procedures hurt the airline industries as it make it less convenient to fly and more expensive. However, it has been shown to be successful as other post 9/11 attempts to use airlines as weapons have been thwarted. Unfortunately, as a consumer myself, I do not like the idea of these "enhanced measures" being carried out on my young daughters. So I make the choice to use other means when I travel, albeit they are much slower. If airline and shipping companies, as well as their clients/customers, wish to avoid being victims of future attacks, then they need to accept a few more inconveniences as part of the overall effort to keep everyone safe.
