Assignment description:
Choose a work of fiction in the form of a movie, a novel, or several (2-3) episodes of a t.v. series. You may choose something you have read or seen before, but you will need to re-read or re-watch it to do this assignment. The movie, novel, or show can represent your own culture, another culture, a subculture, a culture of the past (e.g., a movie based on a Shakespearean play), or an invented culture (e.g., an animated or science fiction movie).
First, write a maximum one-page synopsis (double-spaced). This summary of the movie, novel, or show should answer questions such as Who, What, Where, and When? Remember that the grader will not necessarily have read or seen what you are writing about, so you need to explain it. If you choose a t.v. series, you will need to describe the series in general as well as the particular episodes you have chosen to analyze.
Then write a 4 page essay analyzing the movie, novel, or show as a ?cultural text?, using two of the following three course themes as the basis for your analysis:
1) family/kinship/marriage (Kottak, chapter 7+Barker, second half of chapter 3)
2) gender/gender roles/sexuality (Kottak, chapter 8+Barker, first half of chapter 3)
3) ethnicity/race (Kottak, chapter 11)
In the analysis, you are required to analyze the ideas about family, gender, and race/ethnicity in the cultural text using ideas and concepts from the course, and incorporating at a minimum 4 ?key terms? in bold face that are taken from Kottak?s Key Terms lists at the ends of the chapters in Mirror for Humanity. The key terms can come from the family, gender, and ethnicity/race chapters but also from other chapters (e.g., ?ethnocentrism? or ?acculturation? from chapter 2). Try to use key terms that show the concepts you have learned in the course (e.g., ?neolocality? is a more effective term to use than ?family?, since ?family? was clearly part of your vocabulary without taking this course). Additionally, the essay should have a comparative element ? begin by discussing how the text reveals cultural norms, then at the end discuss how these contrast with other cultural contexts (e.g., your own culture, or, if the movie/novel/show is about your own culture, other cultural norms discussed in Kottak).
The goal of your paper should be to go beyond description to analyze the movie, novel, or t.v. series you are discussing. Analysis involves commenting on how cultural concepts such as gender roles, ideas about the family, and views of race and ethnicity are communicated, directly or indirectly, in that cultural product, and what this tells us about the culture.
Format:
You must include:
1. a title page, with a title that indicates the name of the novel, film, or t.v. series and what aspects you are analyzing (gender, family, race, etc.), as well as your name, the professor?s name, the TA?s name, the course number and name, and the date. An appropriate title would read something like, ?An analysis of conceptions of race and gender roles in the film Munchkins from Outer Space?.
2. a maximum 1-page summary of the story line and key characters of the novel, film, or t.v. series, double-spaced. You can title this ?Synopsis.?
3. an analysis that is 4 pages long (not including the summary, title page and bibliography), double-spaced. You can title this ?Analysis.?
4. a bibliography of your source (the movie, novel, or t.v. series), following the rules for citation of sources and bibliographic referencing outlined in the APA style guide provided.
Your assignment must be typed, double-spaced in a 12-point font with 1-inch margins. Bibliographic entries should be single-spaced. Pages must be numbered, not including the title page; the first page of the essay (the summary) is page 1. Always spell check and keep a back-up copy of your assignment. As a rule, a paper that is 10% longer or shorter than the required length is acceptable; more than that and you will be penalized. Since this assignment is 5 pages long (including both summary and analysis), this means it should fall within 4.5 to 5.5 pages total.

Citation of sources:
You should include a bibliography at the end of the essay, even though in most cases the only reference in the bibliography will be the movie, novel, or t.v. series you are describing. If you do cite another source, it should be included as well. Follow APA Style for your bibliographic entry. The title ?References? should appear first (this does not need to be on a separate page from the end of the essay). Then you should include the source your paper is about, using the following APA format guide. The guide is very specific ? please follow the rules exactly. If you don?t know certain information, for example the original broadcast date of a t.v. series, it is ok to look this basic information up on the Internet (e.g., Wikipedia). For more information on APA style, which is the most common style guide used in the social sciences, there are many guides available on the Internet.
