According to Fredric Jameson, postmodernity is characterised by a ‘scepticism towards metanarratives’ stemming from the conditions of labour and culture associated with late capitalist modes of production. Explain what he means by this, drawing on one metanarrative that can be said to have broken down under late capitalism. What problems, and what possibilities, are opened up by the decline of grand narratives?

2500-3000 字

Contemporary society is often described as ‘postmodern’; for Fredric Jameson, one of the key thinkers in postmodern thought whose work we will be reading this week, postmodernity is ‘the dominant cultural logic of late capitalism’. In this lecture, we will examine how postmodernism emerged out of modernism, originating in a critique of the ‘grand narratives’ and the belief in progress, objectivity, and reason associated with the Enlightenment. Following on from the last part of the course, where we considered the cultural politics of taste, we will examine how categories of good taste and minimalism, associated with modernism, have given way to a postmodern aesthetic that celebrates vulgarity, playfulness and consumption. The lecture will focus on examples from postmodern art and architecture to examine how postmodern thought has questioned and transformed ideas about ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture.

Negative Impact of Biofuel production on the environment Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

There is a governmental mandate to increase biofuel production. But some biofuel production, particularly corn based ethanol production, has been shown to cause more harm than good to the environment. You dont have to use these, but here are some examples: Deadzones from fertilizer runoff, increased carbon emissions from clearing farm land, destruction of natural habitats etc.

Show how biofuel production does more harm than good and how it can be changed to reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Analyze the negative impact of the use and production of BioFuels on a national level, or world-wide. In addition to the project itself, include an examination of the environmental issue that the project centers on. The essay will be half examination of project, half examination of the issue.

This issue must be arguable from multiple points of view. You should write for an audience that could potentially devote their time, money, and energy to this project. Keep your writing style and information professional while still being approachable by a wide audience.

The crucible book rationale Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

It has to be write in form of newspaper and how it would be written in a different newspaper. The article you have to write rationale is this one:

The Crucible book- If the text had been written in a different time or place or language or for a different audience, how and why might it be different
Name
Institution
Date

The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller in the 1950’s about witches and their various effects to the society in general. The Crucible takes place at Salem in Massachusetts in the year 1962 and revolves around the events which happened called the Salem Witch Trials where witches were given a trial and later on executed, at the time when the towns of Puritan in New England were gripped with paranoia, hysteria and deceit due to the existence of the witches.
Had the play been written in a different time take the modern times, then in act one, Betty Rev. Samuel Parris’ daughter would not be in bed but at the hospital receiving treatment for her illness and thus her father would be with her at the hospital but not at home. The believed that she had been bewitched as they had the belief that they lived amongst witches. Had it been in the modern times, then first they would have to conduct a series of laboratory tests and determine the real cause of her illness, diagnose her and prescribe her the right medication but rather since they believed in witchcraft, they saw it as a curse which could only be lifted by the witch who had cast it upon her. The fact that Betty had been bewitched is confirmed by the doctor when he sends on of his staff to tell Rev. Parris that he had looked though the books but could not find any explanation.

The Crucible book- If the text had been written3

In the modern times only facts from the laboratory would confirm this suspicion as in that time they relied more on books rather than facts from the laboratory.
If the play had been written in the present rather than being based on previous events, then the judges would not have to be taken from a different town but rather each town would have had to have its own judges and jury. The trials also seemed unfair as there was no formal representation of the accused in the court and thus making the judges’ decisions final. There also was no investigation that took place rather once a person was accused and a little bit of evidence presented, then the judges would ultimately find the accused guilty without a fair and just trial. This in the modern times would have to be a process as investigations into the matter would be thoroughly done. The accused is said to be innocent until proven guilty by the court of law and thus for one to be declared guilty the evidence presented would have to be substantial and true. Further, one has the freedom of speech unlike in The Crucible where it seemed the priests had almost the final say on who was a witch and who was not. Like in the case of Rev. John Hale, once he suspected any one of being a witch, the person would then have to undergo trial or otherwise prove the reverend wrong which in most cases was impossible.
In the modern times, a witch is hard to come by and since it seems like a religion, one has the right to worship what ever

or who ever one is pleased with as long as one does not interfere with other peoples activities, cause a disturbance or bring harm to any one else, then no one has to interfere with the other’s freedom but from this it seems that once one was suspected to be a witch then they had to be executed once the judges gave the orders. The mode of execution was also of disturbance as once one was found guilty, they would be hanged unless one was pregnant one would be executed after they had delivered the baby. This was not fair as the children would be left as orphans as opposed to the present days, the mother would be allowed to take care of her child up to a certain stage after which the child would be taken into foster care so as to get education and also enjoy outside life.
There were also allegations made against others so that one would be executed whereby others would take advantage of this and make false accusations against those who they had problems with as they would be executed as a form of vengeance. This in modern cases is a problem as once people have a problem they usually settle it in the courts or using the elders or other people by sharing their problems. This is a major difference between The Crucible times and the present times.
If the play had been set at a different place, then the people’s reactions towards the witches would be different as there are some places where people fear and respect witches due to their capabilities and some of them considered witches as

healers and thus would not have been executing them as they would usually seek consult from them as they were viewed as divine, spiritual and special. Witches were viewed special due to the fact that they lived in seclusions away from the rest of the people, would perform various activities on behalf of the society and community such as making sacrifices and praying for rain in the dry spells. Witches would also foretell the future and thus would be of importance to the various community leaders.
Witches were considered to be divine and thus were next to the kings and chiefs. They would be among the king’s consults and thus were ranked highly in the king’s council as they would foretell such things as threats against the kingdom their weaknesses and strengths. If they went to war without consulting the witches, they would ultimately be defeated. This caused them to be feared and at the same time respected and it was believed that witchcraft ran throughout in their families whether a boy or a girl though witchcraft was mostly practiced by the females. They also had the privilege to name the heirs to the various thrones once they had passed on.
As per The Crucible I do not agree with the act of execution of the witches due to the fact that in most instances, they were innocent and were not practicing witchcraft. Some were facing trial due to mere false accusations such as Elizabeth. They were also naïve due to the fact that they did not take into consideration that they did not judge people according to their past acts but rather using their present actions
