Your assignment is to perform an analysis of Domingo Sarmiento’s Facundo or, Civilization and Barbarism.
This is a primary source, written in the nineteenth century, about what Sarmiento thought were the most important issues of his age. You must explain HOW he constructs his argument, based on WHAT KINDS of evidence. You are NOT being asked to repeat his arguments (summary) or agree or disagree (criticism).
You need to formulate your own argument about this text. You do not have to answer each part of the question in your paper, but do your best to use one theme as a starting point for developing your own ideas. Below is the topic.
1. Binary Identities. Sarmiento sets up a contrast between “civilization” and “barbarism” right from his title. What is his definition for each—what characteristics does he associate with each group? What is their relationship to each other? What is needed for Argentina to be able to move forward, knowing it is so divided?

You need to support your claims with evidence from the text—direct quotations and explanations of their significance to your arguments.
