1. Introduction (no more than 0.5 pages): The purpose of an introduction is three-fold: (a) to identify the book’s author (or authors); (b) to identify the book’s purpose; and (c) to stimulate interest in your topic (i.e., why should I read this paper?).
2. Summary (approximately 1 pages): Summarize the themes, concepts, and principles of the book. Do not simply restate the contents of each chapter or section or list the chapter titles or section headings. Express these items in your own words and support them with parenthetical references if necessary.
3. Critique (approximately 3 pages): Do not merely write, “I liked/disliked this text.” Instead, (a) Clearly state the thesis of the book; (b) identify two or three strengths of the book; and (c) identify two or three weaknesses of the book. Both of these books have both strengths and weaknesses, so don’t be content to say that you can’t find any weaknesses in the book. After identifying a strength or weakness, be sure to provide evidence from the book in support of your claim in order to make your case; and (d) finally, answer the question: does the author fulfill his purpose?
4. Application (approximately 1 page): Apply the content of the chapters to your life and/or your ministry. Be specific. Don’t merely say, “I’m going to focus more on my family.” Instead, tell me what you will do differently as a result of reading this book.
5. Conclusion (no more than 0.5 pages): Wrap up your paper and tell me whether you would recommend the book to others.
