You will be creating an objective, written literature review on the concept of ‘Competence in Nursing” . In your literature review, you will be referring to article authors only in the objective manner
The Journal Articles:
8 substantive journal articles total, 6 of which must be research based. The articles must be found in peer reviewed, disciplinary journals and not on the web.
All articles must be by different primary nurse authors from CINAHL, and be substantive (no research reviews, editorials, or articles from magazines such as Nursing Standard, Please). Preferably from this list:
Advances in Nursing Science Nursing Science Quarterly Holistic Nursing Practice (Image) Journal of Nursing Scholarship Journal of Advanced Nursing Journal of Holistic Nursing Journal of Nursing Administration Journal of Professional Nursing Journal of Transcultural Nursing International Journal for Human Caring Nurse Education Today Nurse Educator Nursing Education Perspectives Nursing Ethics Nursing Inquiry Nursing Science Quarterly Nursing Research Scandinavian Journal of Caring Science Western Journal of Nursing Research Southern Journal of Nursing Research
. Formatting:
Format your paper in APA 6th Edition. Your paper title will be your named concept. Your subheadings will be Literature Review (5 pages), Discussion (1-2 pages), Recommendations for Education, Research, and Practice (1/2 to1 page).
The Process: You must do the litt review article by article and leave the critic for the discussion section .Identify the most powerful article, and organize the articles with the most important at the top, to the least significant at the bottom. You will begin with the most powerful article and steadily and sequentially, work your way through each article until you have reviewed all 10 articles. Do NOT review/write about all the articles at the same time and jump backwards and forwards between them. It becomes confusing. You are aiming for a methodical, steady, clear review of the content applicable to your concept in each article, until you have finished the 10.
1. Write in the active, objective voice, with no contractions, in a formal style.
2. Briefly introduce the type of research being done in each research article, what the N= is, and the population studied Focus on the results.
3. Important: Do not discuss or include quotes from the author’s own literature review –
these will be secondary sources and are not acceptable. This means that you will not be using “As cited in….” at any time.
4. Only 2 brief (1 – 2 lines max.) direct quotes) – no more, per page.
5. Important: You must cite the author/s and date in the first sentence of each article paragraph, and keep the author’s name visible by continuing to use it in the paragraph. (Note: You do not need cite the article title in text. It goes only in the references list). This means that one mention of the author in an entire paragraph is not enough, especially if it is at the end of the paragraph. By the time the reader (me, for example) gets to the end of the paragraph, they will think that you were the author of the ideas you are writing about. This comes very close to plagiarism, so please be careful.
Your discussion will compare and contrast your findings from each of the articles, illuminating meanings. You will identify what was omitted, thinly addressed, or thoroughly examined, that is, both positive and negative aspects.
