Initial discussion
You should explain to the teacher that:
you are studying this course which focuses on literacy and numeracy teaching
you wish to observe and take notes of a practical demonstration of how numeracy is taught in a lesson
you are interested particularly in how a specific numeracy concept or a numeracy strategy is presented within a lesson, the way the class is grouped, the activities that are used to support the learning, the resources that are employed and the informal assessment that is conducted.
you will need to be present in the classroom for at least one lesson prior to the formally observed one.
The teacher should be in agreement with these arrangements. You need to be clear that you are not there to pass judgement about his/her teaching, but are simply observing numeracy teaching processes in situ as a non-participant observer.
At this point you will need to complete a Griffith University Professional Practice Placement Approval (PPPA) form, have it signed by an authorised person representing the venue and the teacher you will observe and return it to DrAnn Kelly. A standard letter explaining the course can be obtained from the course convenor to support your requests for permission to observe at a site if this is required.
Discussion prior to the observed lesson
Prior to formally observing the negotiated lesson, it would be useful to find out:
a) the program/course in which the students are enrolled, the curriculum that is being used and the anticipated competencies/learning outcomes to be attained
b) a little information about the students (e.g. their numeracy competence, their work experience)
c) how the observed lesson fits within the curriculum
d) the teaching strategies, resources and informal assessment strategies the teacher intends to use.
e) where you might sit so that you can be as unobtrusive as possible.
Note-taking during the observation
It is recommended that you use the table at the end of Module 6 of the Study Guide for this course as a template for your observation. This template provides you with the following:
time slots for different parts of the lesson
the objective/s of the lesson
the activities through which the content and skills were delivered and practised
the resources used
the informal assessment strategies used.
Your observation report
Your report of the observation serves as the first assignment for this course. It is recommended that it be structured in the following way:
Introduction
This section should include brief descriptions of
the location, class, teacher and students
(Note: Omit specific names in this section)
the program in which the students are enrolled and the curriculum used
the objective/s of the lesson
your overall evaluation of the lesson.
Literature review
This section should contain, at a minimum, references to ideas contained in the in the readings about numeracy theory and pedagogy. It should also address teaching strategies relating to the knowledge and skills focused on by the teacher.
The observed lesson
In this section, you should address the following aspects of the lesson you observed:
its temporal organisation (how it was structured in time segments)
the activities which the content and skills were delivered and practised
the pedagogical strategies that were employed
the resources that were used and how they were used
the informal assessment strategy/strategies that were used to check learning was occurring.
Implications for numeracy teaching
In this section, you should review what you have found in your observation in relation to the literature you have referenced earlier in the report. For example, you should note what aspects aligned with the ideas in the literature and where there were differences. You also need to reflect on what you have learned that could influence your own teaching.
Appendices (letter and name these)
Possible items for inclusion in this section are:
a copy of the particular curriculum section to which the observed lesson related
a copy of the notes you took in your pre-observation discussions with the teacher
a copy of the notes you took during the observation (e.g. the completed template).
Criteria & Marking:
Assignment 1: Assessment Criteria (40%)
Your report will be judged on the following criteria:
the quality of your description of the observed class and setting
the quality of your analysis of the observed lesson
the extent, depth and relevance of the literature review on which the observation is grounded
the practical and theoretical depth of your understanding of the implications for teaching/training or academic development
the excellence of your expression, coherence and referencing.
