American Society and Economy
Coursework for semester two
Write an essay on a specific topic of interest to you which relates to any debate relevant to the second semester of the course, (e.g. labour markets, corporate restructuring, Cold War legacy, war on terror). A list of possible questions is provided, and the simplest option is simply to select one from the list. Alternatively, you can choose to set your own essay question which invites a debate and a final answer. If you chose to write your own question you must check it through with the course tutor for semester two (Dr McCann) to check that it is appropriate. Try to debate all sides of the argument in the essay and critically evaluate the existing literature. You are encouraged to read beyond the reading list, but you must also use at least some of the pieces of the reading list, to ensure your work connects with the course. You need to provide a fair analysis of the literature, but in the end you need to conclude with your own argument, backed up by evidence, which answers the question in a conclusive manner. What is required in the essay is a reasoned, sound argument which puts forward your own position. What we don’t want is a bland review of the main areas with no argument and no original thinking or critical appraisal of existing literature. The essay counts for 100% of your final grade in this course, so getting your question and answer right is hugely important!
Below are some examples of good essay questions. You can either select one of these, or develop one of your own using these as a model for the kind of question required.

• A few bad apples or a rotten tree? To what extent is Corporate Governance failing in the US?

• Why has the US union movement been in such steep decline in recent years? Are there any signs of a revival?

• To what extent is the ‘hourglass economy’ a problem in the USA? How might this ‘problem’ be solved?

• Is America genuinely a ‘land of opportunity’? Discuss with reference to the women’s movement in the US.

• To what extent are US environmental protection policies adequate for helping to curb global warming?

• Critically review the value of the arguments made in [*insert book on reading list] by [*insert author(s)]. To what extent are these arguments valid and why?

• Critically assess the strengths and limitations of the Conservative social and political viewpoint in the US.

• Has Affirmative Action had any positive results? Should the policy be abandoned?

• To what extent has racial and ethnic equality been achieved in contemporary America?

• Why did President Kennedy announce in 1961 that the US would ‘pay any price, bear any burden […] in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty’? To what extent was committing the US to this foreign policy position sensible and feasible?”

• What were the main objectives of senior US foreign policy makers during the Cold War era? To what extent have these objectives changed since the collapse of the USSR, and why?

• To what extent has the ‘numbers-based’ management approach, as developed by Robert S. McNamara, turned out to be a practical failure?

• Is the ‘War on Terror’ being effectively run? Why or why not?

• In what ways have large US corporations restructured their operations in recent years and why?

• How well (or how badly) are the large corporations of America facing up to the challenges of globalization?

Best of luck with the essay
