The purposes of the Health Policy Issue Paper are to: (a) provide students with the opportunity to review a current health policy, critically analyze the policy, and evaluate policy’s impact on the delivery of healthcare services and APN practice, (b) promote systems level thinking and understanding of contemporary health policy issues, and (c) further the development of writing skills including application of APA formatting rules/guidelines. NOTE: The body of the paper should be no longer than 5 pages maximum. This page limit does not include the title or the reference pages. Points will be deducted for papers that exceed the five-page limit. A minimum of eight (8) primary source, evidence-based, peer-reviewed references are required. Your score on this assignment constitutes 35% of the final grade in the course.
Instructions:
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) represents the most significant government expansion and regulatory overhaul of the US Healthcare system since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965. The PPACA is aimed at increasing the rate of health insurance coverage for Americans and reducing the overall costs of health care. Working in the front lines of patient care, nurses can play a vital role in helping to realize the objectives set forth in the 2010 PPACA. In addition, healthcare reform provides significant opportunities in the delivery of health care by Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs).
For this assignment students are to review the PPACA, select one aspect of the PPACA, critically analyze the selected aspect of the law, including the benefits and risks of implementation, and finally discuss the impact of the selected aspect on healthcare delivery and Advanced Practice Nurses.
The Health Policy Issue Paper will include the following components and for the assignment students should:
1. Discuss and summarize key components of the PPACA
2. Select one of the following aspects of the PPACA and discuss in detail:
a. State Medicaid Expansion
b. Accountable Care Organization (ACO)
c. Health Insurance Exchanges
d. Individual Mandate – Requirement to have coverage
e. Employer Requirements – Requirement to offer coverage
f. Mandated changes to private insurance
3. Critically analyze your selected aspect of the PPACA in terms of benefits and risks of its implementation (your one selected item from 2a-f above).
4. Examine how the implementation of your selected aspect of the PPACA will impact healthcare delivery and services.
5. Examine how the implementation of your selected aspect of the PPACA will impact the role and work of Advanced Practice Nurses.
6. Use the components of the template below as headings (Refer to the APA Manual, p. 62; re: Sections 3.02 and 3.03) in your paper:
