Field Project: Analysis of an Issue Impacting District??s Focus on Learning (50 points)
Field-based and Problem-solving Task (ELCC Standard 4.1)
This is the major field-based and problem-solving component of the course.
Identify and analyze a major, authentic issue that is affecting or that might affect (positively or negatively) the district??s plan for effective instructional programs and services.
First become familiar with the district’s strategic plan and/or vision for learning. Then conduct a minimum of five (Phase I) interviews (using ??thoughtful questions’) to ascertain what your interviewees perceive as the most pressing issues facing the district’s plan for effective instructional programs and services. Include district administrators, board members, teachers, students, and parents among your interviewees. You could conduct this assessment individually or through a focus group.
Then pick the one issue you consider to have the most potential (positive or negative) for contributing to and/or interfering with the district’s focus on learning. It’s imperative that the issue you select impacts the focus on learning. In the final report, be prepared to provide the rationale for your selection.
Then research the issue through the literature, an internet search, and appropriate individual or focus group (Phase II) interviews (e.g., other administrators, teachers, school board members, parents, students, community members, etc.). The point is to thoroughly analyze an authentic, key issue impacting your district??s focus on learning.
Focus on a real issue that will help your district. Some past examples are: Teacher Evaluation, Teacher Morale, Professional Development, Curriculum Alignment, Reducing Drop-Out Rate, Retaining Quality Teachers. These are just some ideas of issues that have been done. But don??t let them lock you in to what you might do. Be creative and help YOUR district with a real, live issue.
At the end of the term, simulate the role of superintendent by preparing a report in writing (accompanied by a PowerPoint slide show) suitable for presentation to the School Board. The 10 to 12 page report should include the following components (submit PowerPoint and report through Blackboard Learn Field Project):
