You will conduct a small research study on a topic within the scope of intercultural communication. For your project, you will need to collect your own data. For example, you may audio- or video-record and analyze face-to-face interaction, conduct a survey or an experiment, and/or collect and analyze print communication (e.g., magazine ads, comic books) or computer-mediated communication (e.g., emails, chat rooms). If you are basing your project on interviews, you need to interview at least three people. You are allowed to use data from your interview project, if appropriate. Following are some example projects: recorded interactions at an ethnic American club, organization or church; recorded interactions in bilingual classrooms or ESL classrooms with immigrant students; interviews with three generations of Asian/African/European/Hispanic Americans about language transmission and language use; collect and analyze bilingual advertisements in ethnic language newspapers; go to an ethnic American chat room on the internet and print out conversations in which participants code-switch or talk about ethnic identity. This project must be 8-10 pages, typed, double-spaced, with 1? margins, in 12-point font (not including references or appendices). Interweave transcribed data with your framing and analysis. Cite at least five course readings, and append a sample of your data (e.g., a transcript, a printout of a web source).
The final version of the project should include the following:
(1) an articulation of a research question
(2) an explanation of some analytical perspectives that are adopted to address the research question
(3) some efforts guided by the chosen analytical perspectives to actually address the research question (methods, procedures, data source, subjects, etc.)
(4) a discussion of major findings
(5) conclusions and a discussion of limitations/suggestions for future work
(6) overall clarity and coherence
