TERM PROJECT – MUSC 2700
Music Profession Analysis

OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this term project is twofold; (1) to encourage comprehensive research of a field of music of special interest to the student while building a thorough understanding of the profession and (2), to provide a research foundation for the Artist Management ?Career Plan? term project of the next semester. The intensive research undertaken in this project should provide valuable insights into the real-world situations and day-to-day operations within the student?s field of interest. The ultimate goal of this project is to challenge your preconceived ideas about particular fields of interest while exploring a constructive and practical plan for success.

INSTRUCTIONS:
Students are expected to research either a field of music they hope to enter or a profession they find particularly interesting, (Performing Artist, Songwriter, Artist Manager, Recording Engineer, Entertainment Lawyer, etc.) to determine:
Academic qualifications and credentials required or helpful to entry-level as well as advancement within the field. While there is probably no such thing as a typical career path in music, you live in a new era where education has proven to be a helpful tool, at least according to bands like The Fray (CU graduates) and John Mayer and Sheryl Crow (Berklee College of Music Alumni). Specifically: look around at what is available here and at other colleges. What courses will YOU take to become a better songwriter, engineer or music business professional? WHAT ACADEMIC (classes, seminars etc.) can YOU talk about that will help you??????????????
?Other? qualifications, skills, aptitudes and training that may be of value. This stage should also include some elaboration of temperament, talents and non-skill related attributes that are/were explained by successful professionals. What other qualifications will YOU be able to look at in YOUR life??????? Are you short tempered??? Not a great thing for a record producer????
Professional experiences, internships, and apprenticeships you might get involved with which may have a positive impact on the employability of those in the field. Check out the office of Experiential Learning ? what grade point do you need to do an internship for credit??? If you are a performer ? where can you get the ?intern experience? ????
Examination of the job market for the profession: -Openings?employment outlook for the next few years -Income: Starting and potential -Competition for positions -Contacts, local and national: The locations and or industry outlets, best employers and employers most accessible -Trends within the field which may have an impact on the individual career. If you can talk to people who are doing it!!!!!!!!! If no go online and get the most up-to-date info!!!!!!!!
Research into ?typical? career paths: How have successful people in the profession ?made it.? You can do this through interviews and biographies. Suggestions include reading a biography of an artist (Eric Clapton) producer, engineer, manager, or concert promoter. Look at as many people as you can who are close to your age group not — how are they making it ? go online and do research??
Possible ?Alternative? or ?Spin-off? or ?Plan B? which are side-careers that ?may develop? in the course of the profession. For example a songwriting career may go from local rock band to jingle production in a studio, to teaching guitar in spare time, and in the process you might get jobs doing audio engineer and even producing. What kind of academics, internships and job prospects are there for that job? BRING IT ALL TOGETHER!!!!!
USING WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED, CONCLUDE WITH YOUR projected career path for the next 1 to 3 years. Even if you do not stay involved in this career that you are researching, this will give you an idea of how to move forward and achieve the goal of a career in the field.
