Your aim is not to report what was in the book, but to present an analytical argument about the book and its importance. One way to think of it is as a review for other Elementary Mathematics Teaching Majors who might want to read a book about the history of mathematics. What would they benefit from knowing about the book BEFORE they read it? The purpose of this review is NOT to explain whether you liked the book or not, although you can include your opinions about the book. The purpose is to make an argument about the content the book presents and how the author presents it. For example, if you say, ?This books was interesting to read?, you need to go further and explain why: ?because it made an important link between the development of fractions and the increasing demands on people to measure more and more complex things. For example?.? In short, if you make a claim about the book (it is good, bad, interesting, easy to read, too difficult.) you need to substantiate that claim with ideas from the book. The final paper SHOULD NOT BE merely an assessment of whether you liked it or not, whether it was fun or easy, etc. The reader should be able to learn something about the topic of the book by reading your paper.
A good way to think about writing an interesting review is to base it on a thesis statement ? write what would be considered a classic essay about the book. A thesis statement can be like this:
?In this review, I am going to argue that the author shows convincingly that the definition of the concept of limit is one of the most important developments in the history of mathematics.?
OR
?In this review, I am going to argue that the author fails to do what he set out to do, namely to write.
Your review should include the following elements (not necessarily in this order):
a. An overview of the purpose of the book and why you chose it. What was the author setting out to do and why is it important? What led you to select this book in the first place (you can use what you wrote in part 1 here.)
b. An argument about the book itself: For example, you could include ideas about one or more of these questions: From your perspective, was the book interesting or compelling? Why or why not? What stands out as key aspects of the book that make it worth reading, or not? Did the author accomplish his purpose? Was the argument in the book convincing? Why or why not?
c. An argument about the history the book presents: For example you could include ideas about one or more of these questions: What aspects of the history of mathematics did you take away from the book that seem interesting and important? How and what did the historical content in the book add to your understanding of the history of mathematics? What is the relevance of this book to your thinking as a mathematics teacher (and learner)? Given why you selected the book, did it meet your expectations? Why or why not (substantively ? not because it was hard/easy to read or fun/not fun, but because of something about the content)? (This appraisal could be included in either 2 or 3 here, depending on why you chose the book in the first place).
It is important for your review to be a coherent, readable essay that makes sense and is grammatically correct. It should not be a set of disconnected ideas or bullet points about the book; nor should it be an outline. Think of it as an essay that someone else might read to understand the book. Misspelling and errors of grammar will detract from the final grade. The final grade will be based on:

Coherence of presentation and argument
Grammar and spelling
