As a final project you will need to review one potential area of outsourcing in some detail. Review the text case studies to see how some companies (like Toyota) built the systems totally in-house where others outsourced some or all of a particular task to allow them to focus on their primary mission.
You will need to make a PowerPoint presentation of your findings. Plan your presentation for about 10-15 minutes. As an online class you will not be able to do the presentations in person; so in place of the live presentation, you will need to write a report which contains the material you would cover while showing the slide show of your presentation. If you prefer, you can add notes in the notes pane of the slides (rather than writing a separate report) detailing what you would say in person Note: Short comments in the slides do not count as a report. The notes would have to be a detailed report of what you would say to the group as you present each slide. This is a good practice as it provides a model for future presentations.

You may get better results if you include the keyword Commercial, Business or Services, such as "Review of Business Web Hosting". Also try adding the keyword Outsourcing to find additional review articles. It may take a while. My suggestions above are just hints to get you started, you should look further.
Base Line Company – VideoTech
In order to build a business proposal you will need to base your proposal on a company � real or fictitious – in order to be able to provide some hard facts and figures. If you don’t have one of your own (such as where you work) you can use the following sample company:
VideoTech makes Digital TV Converter Boxes. There is a manufacturing plant with 50 employees that makes and ships the product to retail stores (Wal-Mart, Target etc.). The factory also has a retail store on site to sell directly to consumers. The on-site store has a staff of 5.
The main office handles corporate sales (5 staff), payroll (3 staff), human resources (3 staff), facilities (5 staff), shipping and receiving (5 staff) and the company management (7 staff).
The IT department provides computer support (5 staff – there is one computer per employee in the company including manufacturing). In addition, they have database systems for sales, production, human resources, payroll and management (3 additional staff).
They also sell the converter boxes on the web and have a web server with an e-commerce suite (shopping cart) (2 staff).
Assignment
The outsourcing topics and sample company described above have plenty of options for you to explore to consider outsourcing. After studying the organization of VideoTech (or a company of your choice), pick an outsourcing topic and start researching it. As you do your research, be sure that your topic and company will permit you to address the following issues/questions in your presentation:
1) Include a title slide with the topic you will cover.
2) Explain what part of the company you plan to outsource.
3) What is the current cost of performing this task in house? For the salaries search for "Average salary of a web master", "Average salary of a sales associate" or "Average salary of a database administrator". You can also search for "Average cost to support an office computer", or "Average cost to host an e-commerce web site".
4) Identify several outsourcing providers. How big are the outsourcing providers and who are their clients? What level of services do they offer?
5) How are you going to manage the outsourcing? Once fully outsourced, who in the company will be the liaison with the outsourcing company? If you are only outsourcing a small part of your function, how will the company in-house operation interact with the outsourcing company?
6) What are the benefits and risk of your proposed solution? Consider what would happen if you want to change how the service is provided. For example: what if the outsourcing company were to go out of business, what if the outsourcing company does a poor job, what if VideoTech were to reorganize and needs to modify services that may be under contract with the outsourcing companies.
7) The written report should contain an introduction describing what you are proposing and what your base assumptions are. Follow this introduction with a paragraph for each slide detailing what you are going to discuss while you are showing that slide. End your report with a detailed list of correctly cited references indicating where you obtained the information that you used in
your report. NOTE: Your written report must be a separate document from the PowerPoint presentation OR the report can be written in pieces by inserting text in the notes area at the bottom of each slide in the presentation.
