Over the past couple of weeks we developed a deeper appreciation for the variety of ways the “sacred” is present in our lives and culture. We have come to understand how the sacred (both holy and taboo) is separate from the profane and now know some significant theologians who have helped us explain the sacred. Additionally, we learned about different aspects of the sacred including symbol, myth, doctrine (chapter 4), ritual (chapter 5), scripture (chapter 6), and society (chapter 7). Now it is your turn to find something sacred.
For this paper you will need to find something sacred and explain in detail why it is considered sacred as opposed to profane or ordinary. The sacred item, space, group, doctrine, etc. can come from anywhere or be anything, but you will need to prove it is sacred based on what you have learned in class with the help of the textbook.
Some recommendations:
1) Our textbook divides the sacred into a couple of categories. Instead of trying to find something that applies to all categories, I recommend going with one area of focus.
2) I highly recommend you define what it means to be sacred and then make sure it applies to the particular entity you are claiming to be sacred.
3) Use the chapters to help prove your point.
4) The paper should be treated as an academic exercise, meaning there is no need for the use of the subject I. You need to act as if you are trying to convince me that the item of your choosing is sacred and I do not believe you.
