As defined by the World Bank, the secondary school enroll- ment rate is the “proportion of the population enrolled in secondary education.” Your assignment is to a 750-word descriptive comparison of male versus female secondary education enrollment in countries all around the world.
The accompanying dataset (on the course Blackboard site) contains measures of the secondary education enrollment rate for both males and females in 162 countries in the year 2000. To begin, what is the average rate of female secondary education enrollment in the sample? What is the average for males? Calculate the standard deviations and inter-quartile ranges of both of these variables. What does this indicate about the variation in male and female secondary education enrollment rates across countries?
Plot two histograms (and paste both into your essay) showing the distribution of each of these variables, and describe how these distributions relate to the summary statistics you just calculated. According to your histograms, in approximately what percentage of countries is female secondary education enrollment above 80%? In approximately what percentage of countries is male secondary education enrollment above 80%?
Finally, create a new variable that is equal to the difference in each country between the male and female secondary education enrollment rates, and plot a histogram of this variable. Describe the distribution: is it skewed left or right, and what does this imply about the world? Are there any countries in which female secondary education enrollment rates are greater than rates for males? In which countries is the gap between male and female secondary education enrollment rates the largest—approximately 10 percentage points or more? What do most of these countries have in common?
