Reflection Paper
The purpose of this paper is to forge connections between important counseling skills, counseling theory, and personal experiences and to communicate these connections clearly and succinctly. You have been instructed to engage in self�reflection throughout the course by keeping a journal which should act as an outline/resource for this final paper. Since your weekly reflections were intended for honest personal exploration, you were not asked to submit these for grading. However, it is the expectation that these ideas be organized in a more formal manner using the guideline below.
The final reflection paper is aimed at helping you learn more about yourself and to explore the implications of your self-discovery, especially in terms of the personal fit of basic counseling. Skills, various models of counseling, and the role you might potentially play as a counselor in various situations. This may require you to explore past experiences, reflect on your family dynamics, identify personal biases, and analyze patterns of personal behavior, thoughts, or feelings.
Your paper should consist of three separate sections, entitled: Client Reflection, Counselor Reflection, and Summary The following questions for reflection may help to provide a starting point for the Reflection Paper. You are not required to answer all these questions or to address them in any particular order. Use your journal to identify themes that emerged as you worked your way through the course.
Questions to consider in overall reflection:
1. What core values, attitudes, or beliefs emerged as you worked through the self� reflection activities? Were there any surprises?
2. How might your central values influence you as a helping person?
3. What major qualities or strengths do you have that would be an asset to you as a counselor?
4. What weaknesses or unresolved issues might interfere with your work as a counselor?
5. What client groups or client concerns would you find easiest to work with, and why? Would you choose not to work with certain issues or populations?
6. Do limitations in your life experience or particular prejudices hinder your ability to understand and relate to certain clients? How might you overcome your personal limitations so that you could counsel a wider range of clients more effectively?
7. What is your view on how problems develop?
8. Do you focus on the past, the here�and�now, or the future when you try to understand or change something in your own 1ifi? How does this tendency affect
your preference for counseling approaches?
9. What type of relationship would you be most inclined to assume with clients? What does your preference say about how you believe change takes place?
Some simple writing tips:
� Please follow basic writing guidelines (double spaced, Times New Roman Font Size 12, cover page with name, etc.)
� Spell check AND Proofread (don�t just spell check), have another person read it (a very simple, yet productive way of assuring a well organized and clean paper). Don�t make paragraphs too long (4-7. sentences).
� Be careful not to be too redundant (don�t say the same thing numerous times- longer doesn�t always mean better).
� Don�t stress- the paper is your own personal view, opinion, etc. which can�t be wrong (only poorly expressed/developed).
