Students will be asked to read electronic versions of newspapers and/or magazines, searching for articles revolving around child development issues. Students will locate two such newspaper articles to be used in this assignment. The newspaper articles must be at published least three (3) days apart from each other and originally be published during the actual timespan of the course. The newspaper articles should not come from psychologically oriented sources (e.g., Child Development), but rather from newspapers/magazines designed for the general population (e.g., The Globe & Mail, Macleans, etc.).
For each of the two selected newspaper articles, students will identify and briefly describe one developmental theory discussed in the text or class (Piaget or Vygotsky theory )that would be useful in understanding the issues raised in the article (you may not use a theoretical model more than once in the assignment). For each of the newspaper articles students must then find one empirical, peer-reviewed research article published within the past five years that specifically supports or refutes the position of the newspaper article. Students must briefly summarize the key elements/findings of the empirical article. Finally, the student should provide a brief statement as to their position on the issue that is based in the work that they have done for that particular issue. The whole assignment should be no longer than 6 (six) pages in total (including a correctly formatted (APA style) title page and reference page). That is, the description of the developmental theory, summary of an empirical article and position statement should not exceed two (2) pages for each of the newspaper articles. Penalties will be given if page limits are exceeded.

1. Working URL links to the electronic version of the newspaper/magazine articles;
2. The six (6) page portfolio (including a title and reference page) consistent with APA writing style guidelines;
3. Electronic copies of the empirical articles used for the portfolio.
