. The film illustrates the norms and values of the 1950s. It was time of racial inequality, when Black people in America were discriminated and prosecuted, and when whites were full of prejudice and negative towards them, and also when homosexuality was perceived as a mental illness and shame. So, in the film we meet racial and gay identities. But it is better to focus on one main aspect of identity though either race or gender. So lets focus on race. Generallythis film is about social oppression of ?Otherness?. Small town, American culture of the 50s and so on. So it shows 2 sors of ?Otherness?: sexuality and race. As we are focusing on Race, we should of course also mention the other, but see where they intersect.
