Here is an example, which is on page 97, second paragraph of the first page of the Emily Dickinson essay:
” ‘Because I could not stop for Death — / He kindly stopped for me’: the poem begins with the singsong rhythms and perfect rhyme that Dickinson uses to signal a character’s childlike confidence in life’s benevolence [goodness], sometimes symbolized by imagery of springtime beauty. We too are sucked into a receptive mood by the pat social formulas. The trusting speaker fails to see that her suitor’s good manners (“Civility” 8) are a ruse. He is a seducer and a cad, a trickster and a confidence man– a common archetype in nineteenth-century American folklore and literature. A pleasant ride in the country will end in horror.”
Here you see Paglia both making observations about the poem (“singsong rhythms”; “trusting speaker”; “her suitor’s good manners”) and drawing conclusions about those observations: she writes, “We too are sucked in”, meaning that through Dickinson’s tone, the reader also is made to feel trusting and innocent. In other words, we will experience the shock of cold death, as the lady in the poem does. Paglia also describes death as “a seducer and a cad, a trickster and a confidence man”, which all imply an interpretation of Death in the poem as a character who wants to deceive: appearances are not what they seem.
In other words, you have two tasks for Essay 2: to very carefully observe what is happening in the text, and then to suggest interpretations of what is happening
