Your focus should be on ‘Waiting Line’ issues.
Activities: Visit an organization of your choice. Observe a part of their operations that has a ‘waiting line’ issues. ( I can do this part and
go to a store, gather some information and provide that info to you, or we can just make up some numbers) Collect all the information that you
deem necessary to describe the operation, the problem [For example, go to a store/supermarket with multiple checkout lines and observe them for
one hour. For one of the regular (not “express”) lines, record the arrival rate and the service times. Also, across all of the lines, make note
of any reneging, balking, or line jumping that you observe.] Then write a proposal that:
Write a short report about what you have seen.
Qualitatively, how the problem manifested during your observation [for the example of supermarket checkout, how did these lines behave? How long
did the lines grow? Did any customers seem dissatisfied with the length of their respective wait? Did the store seem to have enough servers
available for this time of day? ]
Propose an improvement project, based on waiting line model, to solve the store’s problem
Discuss about the potential solutions for this probem, make sure that you provide the supporting calculations.
