• Each person on the team will only have 5 minutes to speak. A STRICT time limit will be enforced. Each person can only present only once.
• Teams will alternate presentations (first team A; then team B) until everyone has spoken. The class will ask questions of the teams after both teams have finished and then the class will vote (confidentially) on which team won the debate.
Criteria for Individual Mark:
Each student will receive their own individual mark (10% of overall grade). This will be based upon peer grading (marks from classmates). Each member of the class will give a mark for each participant. These will be averaged, and along with the instructor’s mark, will be used to give the student’s mark for the debate. The mark is based upon the following 5 criteria:
1) Clarity
Was the argument presented clearly? Was it easy to understand? Was it completed within the 5 minute time limit?
2) Preparation
Did the student prepare well for the debate? Did he/she go beyond the assigned readings to prepare their argument?
3) Originality
Was it an original argument, based upon original ideas, or did the student largely just repeat ideas from the readings and/or class lectures?
4) Logical consistency
Did the argument make sense? Was it based upon a coherent logic, backed up by specific facts and evidence?
5) Teamwork
Did the entire team work well together? Did they present a coherent, unified argument? Did the presentations balance and support each other (GOOD), or did they repeat or contradict each other (BAD).
ADVICE: Do NOT use Power Point for your presentation. Practice your speech in advance. Be prepared to respond to class questions and the opposing team’s points.
