In case study #8, a situation manifested within a Japanese office that employed western workers through a government program that higher native English speakers to work alongside native Japanese English teacher with the specific intent of improving English instruction to Japanese students. These western employees are employed under a contract that specifies that their duty day ends at 5PM Monday through Friday -the same as Japanese workers.

The conflict arises when the westerners end their workday at 5PM and hold to the workweek days. As described in the case study, resentment and conflict arises in the office between co-workers and between the supervisor and the western workers because the Japanese workers work beyond 5PM daily and work on Saturdays as well. They do so because it is their custom to do so and they find westerners as uncommitted because they do not. The supervisor and western employees have a further issue develop when three of the westerners become ill and they expect to use some sick days. The supervisor wants to charge them ordinary leave during the sick days even though they are contractually entitled to take sick days –again a cultural difference regarding work ethic.

Knowing this cultural custom PRIOR to entering the contract would have allowed the westerners to know in advance, what they might be expected to do. Likewise, if the supervisor had understood that westerners view the contract as the guiding rule regarding work rate expectations, he or she could have approached the situation differently.
