The aim of this study is to investigate the Asian elements that have been used in Western performance designs. This therefore means that the study will explore Western theatrical aspects of drama, art, and music. The keener look into Asian and Western theatre will be for purposes of understanding but not for reasons of classifying them as either ‘primitive’ or ‘advanced’.
Objectives of the Study

Research Context
This research paper will investigate numerous existing literatures pertaining to Asian performance. The researcher has found out that are various western writings on Eastern theatre that are incomplete and/or contains misinterpretations and misrepresentations. This follows from the fact that the surveys conducted were brief and the researchers were non-natives. According to Tao-Ching (2005) in his book ‘The Chinese Conception of the Theatre’, the westerners are provided for with a valuable introduction to Chinese theatre. This research paper will therefore rely on such researches done previously that compare the western theatrical conventions to those of the Asian origin. This will include architecture, props, acting, costumes, performance, and music among others (Douglas 2013, pp. 103-111). Historical perspective on the other hand will investigate changes in art, music, theatre, and drama from the ancient times to modern times. Specifically, this will be the span preceding the Greek tragedies to an era post the 21st century. The study will make use of useful instruments of comparison such as the chronological chart of Eastern theatres and the chronological chart of western theaters. In the East, especially from china, chronologically development of theatre is investigated through several historical stages. They include the Qin dynasty, Han dynasty, Tang dynasty, Song dynasty, and Yuan dynasty periods. Moreover, the study will exemplify the ambiguity of ‘theatre’ and ‘drama’. These two words are used interchangeably in most Asian countries and thus they mean the same to the Easterners (Rachel 2009, p. 81). However, in the west, there are clear boundaries in meaning and usage of the two words.
This study will explore meaning of theatre with respect to other definitions by the earlier scholars. These definitions include ‘public entertainment by human performers’, ‘entertainments involving mimicry and impersonation’, and ‘dramatic performance’ (Tao-Ching 2005, pp. 31-36, 74). The design of this study is subject to identifying Asian drama elements that are incorporate in the broad western performance. There is also need to establish what non-dramatic theatre activities from ancient Asia that are adopted in the traditional and modern western performance. Such items from the east include folk dance, shamanism, religious ceremonies, as well as social ceremonies. Kleiner (2004) observes that, an investigation into Asian theatrical processes reveals that some components such as shamanism rituals failed to reach the threshold of becoming theatre items. This is attributed to their inability to stir ‘impulse’ for entertainment. In addition, shamanism is marred by predominant rituals that overwhelm other aspects of life.

The significance of this in-depth study will assist the Westerners understand Asian theatre. On the other hand, it will help the Easterners/Asians develop and elaborate understanding of their own theatre. The study will demonstrate to the readers that the Asian theatre is not bizarre but a preserved living antique (Robert 2009, p. 19).
Research Strategy
Research involves a systematic inquiry that describes, explains, predicts, and controls observable phenomenon. It involves the proper use of various methodological approaches. These approaches can be classified as either empirical or non-empirical. Empirical approaches involve a systematically pre-planned process of data collection, analysis, and interpretation (Simons, 2000, p. 51). The researcher will use survey design method. This is because, it involves large number of representatives and facts collected that are more appropriate. The method will also spend a shorter time. Gay (2005) asserts that, survey design can be used to asses causes and effects of events. The design is found suitable for the study because it will enable the researcher to collect facts and views from diverse categories of sources. The gathered data will then be summarized and interpreted for the purposes of clarification.
The researcher finds it more suitable to adopt the retrospective research design to justify Asian elements that have been used in Western performance designs. This strategy will be facilitated by use of historical data supplied by numerous resource hubs and organizations. The rationale behind this is that, it is less expensive and easier to find, it reduces loss of subject over time attrition, saves time as compared to prospective that require lots of follow-up (Mira & Claudia 2005, p. 167).
