The purpose of the paper is to identify a reasonable environmental/ecosystem toxic chemical threat. The chemical threat may be from a chemical element, a chemical compound, a chemical mixture or a class of toxic chemicals such as endocrine disrupters, reproductive toxins, heavy metals, etc. Do not write about more than one environmental chemical unless you have my approval.
The paper is to be written as a useable plan for being informed, making risk assessments, and for minimizing chemical threats to the environment that exist in our society.
You are to address each of the following Sections in numerical order and list each Section by Title.
You are to address each of the questions for each section in numerical order and list each question before your answer to the question. Answer all questions even if the answer is “not applicable”.
Section one of the paper is to identify and justify the selection of the specific Environmental Chemical Threat you chose. The discussion must cite at least three data sources such as:
1. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease
Control (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department
of Agriculture (FSIS), Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational
Safety And Health Agency (OSHA), Cornell University or Other
MSDS Data Banks (MSDS),
2. Websites found by keyword searches,
3. Other sources including Class Notes, Interviews, etc.
You must select at least one source that disagrees with the other sources. Where the websites or sources disagree or contain differing information, compare and contrast the data sites that you use in each of the following sections (Sections 2, 3 and 4) of the paper:
Section two is to address the vulnerability of the environment to the specific Chemical Threat. You are to use worst-case scenarios in developing the vulnerability assessment. You must address the following questions in your paper.
1. Is this an Acute or Chronic Environmental Threat?
3. Is this a systemic (ecosystem) or Targeted Species Threat?
4. How likely is it that the chemical will be released in sufficient amounts to do serious harm?
5. How severe are the consequences of the potential exposure?
6. How wide spread is the ecological threat – How many ecosystems and/or species are threatened by the expected exposure,?
7. How available and effective are remedial actions?
Section three is to be a plan of action for your personal efforts to minimize environmental chemical threats including:
1. How you can mitigate the environmental risks and threat that you cited in this paper, and
2. How you would determine what environmental chemical threats you contribute to by your own actions.
3. Identify and include actions you think the responsible government agencies, Indiana University, manufacturers, suppliers, distributors, retailers, etc. should take to better inform, warn, and train the public in the control of environmental chemical threats.
Section four is to be used to present your conclusions. Bring it all together and convince me that the environmental chemical threat you identified is real and needs to be controlled.
