Techniques and models of colour news story writing.
A colour news story uses more imaginative, descriptive narrative techniques than a basic news story- but still its focus is on the ‘ news’.
Colour techniques may be used to most creative effect in arts news and feature stories, hence they make instructive examples. But colour techniques of description and scene-setting are used across the full range of news stories, for example sports, business, current affairs, health, fashion… ‘ Colour’ writing is a form of ‘ showing’, with description, rather than only ‘telling’ the facts, in news writing.
The purpose, and aim, of the ‘colour’ intro is to introduce the news story in such a way as to entice or intrigue the reader into reading on.
Examples, as shown and discussed in ‘Week 6’ lecture, include:
Starting the story- in the intro- with an anecdote.
-Using description of a scene in the intro to ‘set the scene’. To be most effective this should be literally and symbolically appropriate to the story.
-Appealing, in the intro, to the senses- sight, smell, touch, taste to bring the situation to life (and life to the writing).
Starting the story with an anecdote–y y that tells the story using narrative story-telling techniques (as in the ‘Week 6’ lecture/slides example of the ‘Tracey Emin Down Under’ (Skilbeck 2003) art feature story where the story starts with a first person description of an incident at a café (that has symbolic significance in relation to the story’s angle and theme).
Scene setting description From the course reader, the story ‘Make Art Not War’ (pp173-177) is an example of a story which uses colour techniques including (a literally and symbolically ‘colourful’ writing persona), language reminiscent of concrete poetry, and description of art works in the situation of an Australian State art gallery to set the scene of a colour ‘news’ story on the theme of Australia Day and changing concepts and constituents of national identity – that appeals to the senses (visual colours and shapes) to convey the idea of making national identity more ‘colourful’ and diverse.
Sensory appeal Another example, in the course reader (pp 269-276), of colour news writing techniques is the story ‘Charlie Co: Visionary Artist’ (Skilbeck 2003) which starts with a ‘poetic’ colorful description of Co’ ? s painting – using the news value of timeliness, and novelty (the artists’ dream on September 10th, 2001).
Intro length As the story is 600 words ‘scale’ the intro accordingly- no more than 100-150 words for the long ‘colour’ intro (and can be much shorter). Then continue to use colour techniques as appropriate to telling the story.
Writing Sensory Perception and Sensation Techniques to bring the situation to life in writing include focusing on the senses, and sensation; smell, sound, sight, colour, touch, taste. And feeling affect- so that the reader can imagine what you are writing about. That can convey a visceral affect. Or even conjure emotion.
Read a range of newspapers and magazines and notice how writers use such techniques; and bring in an example to discuss in the next class.
The Importance of Grammar in Writing a Colour News Story
To write a colour news story, you must build on the basic conventions or ‘rules’ of news writing including the 5 W’s and 1 H, the Intro, and inverted pyramid. But moving beyond the rules of basic news writing does not mean you can move beyond the rules of grammar. Correct grammar is fundamental to good writing as it ensures that writing conveys meaning clearly.

“ As an aspiring writer, you should understand the foundations of our language, whether you plan to be a journalist, scriptwriter, public relations practitioner or a producer. As your career progresses you may well subvert everything you learn here, but only people who understand the rules can break them and not compromise their ability to convey meaning” (Tynan 2011: 59/47).
In short, increased license to be creative brings with it the responsibility to ensure the grammatical accuracy of your writing. You will be assessed on the standard of your proofreading, as evident in both the news story, and critical reflection.
When proofreading your work, refer to ‘The Elements of Writing’ (Tynan 2011) in the course reader. Pay particular attention to grammatical journalistic sentence structure, making sure to use accurate subject-verb- object agreement (SVO), spelling and punctuation. Use Tynan’s chapter as a guide to proofread your own work.
When describing and reflecting on your research methods you should refer to what we have learnt about journalistic research and how to do it from the readings in the course reader, and the text book (Lamble 2011).
Similarly, when you describe and reflect on your use of journalistic interview techniques, you should refer to the relevant readings in the course reader and text book where interview techniques are discussed and explained (Metzler 1997; White 1996; Wheeler 2005; Lamble 2011) and identify what types of questions you asked in your interviews.
REFERENCING, CITING, QUOTING AND ATTRIBUTION
The assignment requires that at least 3 people be interviewed for the story, although you may need to interview more. Remember to include contact details of the people you interview, as an appendix to the reflection.
Also remember to include a bibliography that accurately lists all the references used in your news story and critical reflection. Use appropriate forms of attribution for all materials used and referred to including text, images, concepts, artworks and so on. You are not required to read beyond the course reader and the textbook, but if you do you must include the references in the bibliography. You must accurately cite all material (both textual and conceptual/ quotes and ideas) that you refer to, indirectly or in quotes, from the course reader, the text book, and lecture notes, in the form of in-text citation (in the critical reflection) and in a bibliography.
