QLTY 221 Research Paper details
We will have a research paper due Monday April 23. The topic is:
Evaluation of an Organization Applying for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award (MBNQA).
The paper should be roughly 2000 words and it is worth 100 points.
It is to be typed in font size 11, normal spacing, in Word, and will have correct grammar and spelling, or lose points accordingly for every such error. List the references used to write your paper on a separate page attached to it.
You must choose a publicly owned company or a non-profit organization which has not won the MBNQA, ideally one you are familiar with, or are at least interested in.
Content required is:
A)company history, B)products/services provided, especially “breakthrough” items that it is known for C)mission, values, & quality statements D) summary of financial performance for the 3 most recent years available. Provide approximately 1/2 page each for sections A-D.
A.Company History should include founder(s), imprtant dates for events, locations of major facilities, acquisitions or mergers, & stock price ranges. Note if the company is publicly owned, and if so, what stock exchange it is traded at. Name the CEO, president and CFO of the organization, if they exist.
B.Services/Products provided should include major breakthroughs/patents, market share enjoyed by their major products, and anything you think makes the organization interesting to you, even lawsuits about products which can make or break a firm.
C.Mission, Values, & Quality Statements are usually found in company literature, including the annual reports. Sources are discussed below.
D.Financial performance includes at least: Sales, Net Profit or loss, Earnings/share, and notes that explain mergers, shares of stock issued, etc. Figures should include 2009-2011 (3 sets of stats).
E) evaluate the company against the MBNQA criteria. Provide Approx 2-4 pages. I expect you to award it a numerical score at the conclusion, as well as your opinion if the company is worthy of the award. This will be the most difficult part of the paper since you will have to dig into the internet and other sources to find out how the organization handles each of the areas being evaluated.

The 7 areas you must score are: Leadership (110 pts max), Strategic Planning (80), Customer & Market Focus (80), Information & Analysis (80), Human Resource Focus(100), Process Management (100), and Business Results (450). In the end, you will be making judgment calls on each of these from what you can discover. I am not going to quibble about 10 or 20 points here or there. I expect this section of the paper to be 2-4 pages long.
Please inform me as soon as you have decided on the organization so that I can approve it. I expect you all to have chosen your organization by Feb 24, if not sooner.

3) Wikipedia also has a related series of articles on the MBNQA. They likely also have articles on most public companies or non-profits as well.
4)Most large corporations will send you a free copy of their Annual Report on request, but it could take a few months, which you do not have. I suggest finding annual reports or 10k reports easily located online.
5)The LCCC library and all public libraries have reference books on company histories and financial results. And of course there is also Google which may have current newspaper or magazine articles on your company of interest. I’d hope this exercise will help you someday find out about a potential company you want to work for.
