• Choose one of the options below and write an essay of minimum 4-5 pages in length, using two relevant sources obtained through the library database.

• Remember, the essay should still focus on close reading of the primary text. Secondary sources or historical information should support your analysis of the text, not overwhelm it. Imagine a 70/30 split—with 70 on textual analysis and 30 on secondary resources.
• Creative non-fiction essays will be more difficult because it will be important to get the right balance of personal narration, textual analysis, and research. Imagine a 30/30/30 split.

Essay Questions
1. Politics can be a belief about political structures in society; the study or practice of a governing body; or, a policy and agenda pertaining to social relations and ideology. The politics of banned books, for example, is a policy built upon certain values upheld and policed by a society. In banning a certain book, or censoring a person or the media, a government attempts to say that the expressed values and ideas are unjustifiable. Azar Nafisi’s Reading Lolita in Tehran asks us to think about the power of language and the issue of censorship: Who benefits from censoring books. What is at stake in silencing people? Discuss the issue of censorship and policing in relation to Reading Lolita in Tehran.
2. Our homeland and our cultural heritage make up a large part of our identity. However, sometimes our attachment to homeland can be complicated by various forces in play that infringe upon or prohibit the full development of our personhood. Satrapi and Nafisi, and others we have read, use personal experiences to understand and to critique the oppressive regimes of their respective homeland. In doing so, they enrich our understanding of human nature and give us a model for enacting resistance in times of turmoil. Using Satrapi or Nafisi as a model of creative non-fiction, choose an important instance or aspect of your own life where reality has collided with external, political ideology and speak about the consequences or epiphanies that have resulted. If choosing this option, you must consult with me.
3. Homelands are often “constructs” involving ideals of religious, cultural, political and social uniformity. What happens when your homeland becomes “hostile,” in the words of Nafisi (11)? Is it still possible to enact “transgressions” or to follow your dreams (8, 11)? Is nationalism a hollow dream? If so, what can take its place? Discuss the discrepancy between national ideals and personal desires in Reading Lolita in Tehran OR Persepolis.
4. Nafisi’s book uses other books and the practice of reading to emphasize the importance of humanistic values. Humanism supports the idea of “human freedom and dignity” (Davies 5). Classical humanism believed that books (the classics) contained both and all the lessons one needed to lead a moral and effective life. Is this true? Has there been a book that has changed your life? Does it teach or promote humanistic principles? Discuss a book that has changed your life in relation to the philosophy of Humanism as well as to Persepolis OR Reading Lolita in Tehran. If choosing this option, you must consult with me immediately.
5. Persepolis is a graphic novel that testifies to a tumultuous moment in Iranian history. However, it is also a very personal memoir of Satrapi’s childhood. Does the autobiography give the national history more weight, or does it invalid itself as being too subjective?
6. Images, stark and crisp, are used to convey subtext, sometimes in juxtaposition to the words, in Persepolis. Discuss the use of images in relation to the narration in Satrapi’s work. How do the images of the text work in relation to Satrapi’s memories? Does the pictorialization of the Islamic Revolution trivialize it? Does the text’s focalization through the eyes of a child undermine or heighten the credibility of the author’s experience. Explain how and why carefully, with lots of examples.
