The Book Precious By Sapphire custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

CHAD 502
Instructions:
1. The general goal for this term paper is for you to learn to apply concepts from the field of
child abuse and neglect to a particular case. This is not a book report, in which you
review what happened. It is your job to critically examine what is reported in the book in
terms of the material you learn about during the semester.
2. Note the suggested dates below to help you organize your assignment. It is expected that the
student will integrate the sections into a fluid, well-written paper which is to be
submitted, in its entirety on April 16, 2012. There will be an automatic 5-point drop
in your grade if the material is submitted late.
3. Select one from the above list of books to read. They are all available through
www.amazon.com, and almost all are available in paperback. You should get the book
and begin reading it immediately, to get an overall sense of the account. It is likely that
you will have to reread the book as you learn more about the field of child abuse and
neglect and begin to apply concepts you have learned to this particular account.
4. You are expected to read at least six additional scholarly articles (from peer- reviewed
journals, not from newspapers or magazines), in addition to the assigned readings for this
course, in order to complete this paper. Watch the brief video that can be accessed at the
link entitled ?Distinguishing scholarly journals? (on the ?Course Information? page on
Blackboard).
5. You are also expected to review and use information from at least one web site that is relevant
to your paper. The web sites listed on the ?External Links? page of Blackboard are for
reputable organizations that provide considerable valuable information. You may use a
web site of your own choosing. However, if you do, be aware that it is important to
evaluate the web site, and you should review the information on ?Evaluating web sites?
through the link available on the ?Course Information? page on Blackboard.
6. You will use these outside readings and web sites, as well as your required reading and notes
from class discussions, to complete the sections of the paper discussed below. You may
choose to focus your outside research (scholarly articles and web site review) on one or
more of the following:
a. causes/risk factors for the type of maltreatment you are reading about
b. dynamics of the type of maltreatment you are reading about (this means how such
maltreatment typically progresses, and what the nature of the interaction is between the
child and adult)
c. the effects of such maltreatment
d. interventions for such maltreatment
7. On February 13, you should have completed reading the book. The first section of the paper
(roughly 4 double-spaced typewritten pages) should include the following information:
a. Full book citation (author, name of book, publisher, date of publication) in APA-style.
See the links on the ?Course Information? page on Blackboard for information about
APA-style.
b. Identification of the writer as the child victim, a therapist, or someone to whom the
story was told.
c. Identification of the child: sex, ages covered in the book, cultural group,
socioeconomic status, family constellation (e.g., mother, grandparents, 3
children), living circumstances covered in the book.
d. Characteristics of Maltreatment:
i. Identify the types of maltreatment described in the book (neglect, physical,
sexual, psychological). Give examples.
ii.Think about what you have learned about each type of maltreatment from the
required reading, the outside reading you do, the web sites you examine, and the
class discussions. Think about the characteristics of the maltreatment, the risk
factors involved, the behaviors of perpetrators, the relationships between
perpetrators and victims.
iii.Discuss the extent to which the types of maltreatment you identify as present in
the book are similar or dissimilar to the characteristics of those types of
maltreatment you have learned about in the course. Focus on whether the
perpetrators of the maltreatment seem to have the psychological dynamics
perpetrators often have, whether there are family and community risk factors
that played a role, and whether the course of the maltreatment and the
relationship between the child and the perpetrator were similar to what you have
learned about. Be specific about the dynamics and characteristics you have
learned and whether they are present in this book. Give examples.
8. On March 19, in the second section of the paper, which should be about 4 pages as well, you
will discuss:
a. Impact of Maltreatment. Discuss the impact that the maltreatment had on the child.
Think about the way the child behaved and thought. Think about symptoms the child
reports or that you identify based on what the book describes.
i. How were this child?s reactions similar or dissimilar to what you have learned
about? Be specific, using concepts and theories discussed in your reading and in
class. Give examples.
ii. Discuss the cycle of violence and resilience. Is this child likely to go on to
maltreat children or not? Is this child likely to have long-term problems in
adulthood? What factors can you identify that are likely to lead down one road
or the other? Be sure to examine evidence of strengths in the child, in the
family, and in the environment that might be the bases of resiliency.
b. By this point, you should definitely have read the scholarly articles and reviewed the
web site. Your discussion in both sections should now include reference to these
sources, as well as the generally assigned readings. You should submit a complete
reference list, in APA- format, and your citations in the body of the paper should also
be in APA-format.
9. By April 16, In the final section, you will discuss:
a. Opportunities for Intervention. Discuss whether there were
opportunities for helping people to become involved that were never taken or
opportunities for helping people to become involved earlier than they did if they
eventually became involved. Discuss why those opportunities were lost. Were there
mandated reporters who failed to report? If so, why do you think they did not do this?
If helpers eventually became involved, discuss what factors seem to have been
present that made those helpers available and made them act.
b. Again, be sure to use appropriate references and citations throughout the paper.
c. The final paper should be at least 10 double-spaced typewritten pages
(not including title page and reference page). It should be in APA- format, with
references and citations in that style.
Grading of Final Paper (100 points): The goal is for everyone to get complete credit for this
assignment.
1. Organization: 8
2. Spelling and Grammar: 8
3. Use of Appropriate Outside Reading: 16
4. Following APA-Style in References and Citations: 8
5. Identification/Discussion of Characteristics of Maltreatment: 20
6. Identification/Discussion of Impact of Maltreatment: 20
7. Identification/Discussion of Opportunities for Intervention: 20

The Ethics of News Gathering custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Format:Use a memo format with section headings, bulleted lists and charts where appropriate, and brief endnotes.

Criteria:Please apply principles of clarity, style, accuracy, and academic honesty to the assignment. Refer to original document(s) when identifying news stories. Also consider secondary material such as course readings, news articles, and databases. Although this assignment is not an essay, please consult the guide to writing essays in this manual.

Topic:Provide a media organization ethics committee with a thorough, clear, and relatively short critical examination of three specific ethical problems and possible solutions for the problems.

Begin the memo with one of the definitions of ?news? from the reading material for this course. As well, describe three ethical paths, and explore the ethical responsibilities, choices, and dilemmas facing news-gathering journalists from the perspective of one of these paths.

Then choose three examples of journalism, from a single media organization or group, that pose ethical problems, such as invasion of privacy, fabricated stories, composite sources (i.e., fictional sources that are part one person, part another) or plagiarism. (These samples should be publicly accessible, so the tutor can review them.) Critique the examples you have chosen from the perspective of one of the three ethical paths. For each of the three cases, analyze the extent to which ethical concerns conflict with (or are outweighed by) by personal, professional, political, or corporate interests. Finally, suggest three remedies for avoiding ethical breaches in the future.

Consider
1.The context within which news if gathered, selected, written up/represented as images or sound, then disseminated
2.Brief historical survey of the development of news
3.Whether there is general agreement (or disagreement) among journalists about ethical standards/best practices
4.The distinctions between truth, objectivity and story-telling
5.Whether journalists should follow their own conscience
6.Whether media organizations should police themselves or be subject to independent public scrutiny

What sources should you use for this assignment?

The question is not asking you to pick three examples from a particular newspaper, or magazine or electronic medium.

When we talk about a media organization or group we are talking about who owns whom. This can get us in to a long discussion about media concentration in Canada, but we will leave that for another day.

So the assignment is asking you to pick three examples from among organizations including, for instance, Bell Media (who own CTV) or Quebcor (who own Sun News) or Woodbridge, who own the Globe and Mail along with BCE.

What Would You Do?
Chapter 16
Control

Subaru Auto Assembly Plant, Lafayette, Indiana.

With gas prices rising and more drivers desiring ecologically friendly vehicles, auto manufacturers turned to hybrid gas/electric cars, like the Toyota Prius and the Ford Fusion, to significantly improve gas mileage and reduce auto emissions. In the next few years, thanks to advances in battery technology, environmentally minded consumers will be able to shop for plug-in cars, like the Nissan Leaf, which have a range of about 40 miles per charge. So, instead of filling up with gas on your way home, you’ll plug in your Leaf in your garage at the end of the day. Business/environment consultant Gary List is not surprised at these trends.

Says Mr. List, “Green has become a hot commodity, it’s something customers are asking about. Employees want to work for companies that are green and politicians are struggling to be greener than the next politician.” While auto manufacturers are making progress on emissions and gas mileage, most pay little attention to the environmental impact of their manufacturing facilities which send hundreds of millions of tons of waste to landfills each year. That waste, in turn contributes to increases in the methane gas emitted from landfills, which some estimate to be more than 20 times as damaging to the environment as carbon dioxide emissions.

The Lafayette Subaru manufacturing facility has an outstanding record on environmental issues. It was the first smoke-free auto assembly plant in the U.S., the first to be ISO 14001 certified (indicating that you have taken steps to identify and control the environmental impact of your plant’s activities, product, and services), and the first to have an on-site solvent recovery system (typically, solvents are some of the worst pollutants in manufacturing). Yet, despite this progress, your Subaru plant sends nearly 500 pounds of waste per car to landfills each year. And with annual production nearing 200,000 cars, that means 100 million pounds of waste were going to landfills each year (including 26 million pounds of steel and 3 million pounds of cardboard and paper). With Subaru’s long commitment to being a green manufacturer, no one is happy with the current situation. While it sounds impossible, you’ve heard about leading-edge companies that are taking steps to become zero-landfill manufacturers. That’s right, zero, zip, nada. Despite producing hundreds of thousands of products, they send no waste to landfills—nothing. You wonder could your production facility do this, too?

Kenney, “The Zero: How to Green,” Industry Week, 36-43. J. McIntosh, “A Solid Program to Reduce Waste,” Subaru Factory Sets New Standards for Going Green and Reduces Costs in the Process,” The Toronto Star, 27 September, 2008, W21; C. Woodyard, “It’s Waste Not, Want Not at Super Green Subaru Plant,” USA Today, 19 February 2009, 1B.

QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED
1. Should the Lafayette, Indiana Subaru plant become a zero waste plant even if it costs them money to do so? Why or why not, please explain the reasoning behind your decision. What if turns out to be only a breakeven proposition will that impact your decision? Why? Or should you do it only if it saves you money? Subaru has a long-standing commitment to the environment, but you’re running a business, not the Sierra Club. What tradeoffs, if any, is the company willing to make in terms of costs and profits to become a zero-landfill manufacturing facility? Does this make good business sense? Why?

2. Based on the decisions in previous question at this plant in Lafayette, Indiana you will only be addressing three out of the four levels of waste minimization, since the fourth deals with safely preparing materials for landfills which will be taken care assuming you become a zero waste plant. The first level is to prevent waste and pollution before they occur, or to reduce them once they do occur. At the second level, called recycle and reuse, wastes are reduced by reusing as many materials as long as possible or by collecting materials for on- or off-site recycling. From steel, to cardboard and paper, to plastics and foam, what steps would you take to minimize waste on these first two levels?

3. The third level of waste minimization, where consultants work with companies to develop treatments for waste via biological, chemical, or other processes to turn potentially harmful waste into harmless compounds or useful by-products. What steps might you put in place in this plant to avoid sending any materials to landfills? Why?

the new food additive custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

please find the attached file

This tutorial will focus on designing toxicology experiments and a testing strategy to assess the safety of a new food additive.
A new food additive (preservative: Preservalot) is being developed by a food company. Prior to the widespread exploitation of this compound its safety will require assessment. How would you test the toxicity of this compound to ensure its safety prior to its widespread use? Use knowledge of the regulatory controls that exist to control food additive use to inform your testing strategy.
The European commission Directive 95/2/EC is responsible for regulating the use of food additives (other than colours and sweeteners) and can be found at: http://ec.europa.eu/food/fs/sfp/addit_flavor/flav11_en.pdf . Guidance on submissions for food additive evaluations can be found at: http://ec.europa.eu/food/fs/sc/scf/out98_en.pdf, which can be used to inform your testing strategy.
ASSIGNMENT:
Submit an essay (word limit of 1500 words) that outlines your testing strategy for assessing the safety of the new food additive. Identify the types of toxicity tests that should be conducted, and their purpose, considering the requirements of the regulatory controls for food additives. Summarise what approach you would take to conduct the toxicity testing. Extensive details of the experimental design are not required, but you will have to consider certain aspects of the experimental design, including but not limited to the following; the types of models that you will use, exposure conditions and endpoints investigated etc.
You should read beyond what you have learnt in the lectures and reference the material you have read using the Harvard system (http://www.hw.ac.uk/library/Harvard%20citing%20and%20referencing%20handout.pdf).
You should think about the format of your essay (e.g. subheadings can be very useful). Diagrams and figures can be used and are encouraged.

Relationship with computer Network custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

You are required to write a short report which details your existing network, explores your relationship with your Superconnector and demonstrates how you will improve the network to help you achieve your personal and professional goals. Please use the following format:

Title page
Provide an appropriate title for the report which indicates the key idea you have learned about networking (hint: do this once the whole report has been written).

Introduction: Mapping your network (500 words)
Read the article by Brian Uzzi and Shannon Dunlap (2005), ?How to build your network?, Harvard Business Review, in the Course e-Reader.

Create a table similar to the one entitled ?How to map your network? on page 56 and fill this table in, as it relates to one particular aspect of your life (eg. career aspirations, work, study, sport, extra-curricular activities, etc). Remember to write an introductory paragraph, provide the table with an appropriate title, and clearly identify the Superconnector.

Write a description and analysis explaining the connections between each of the people in your network, identifying the ?Superconnector?, how you met, how they contribute to your area of interest, and so on. Analyse the network by drawing on ideas from Uzzi and Dunlap (2005); for example, which of the principles discussed by Uzzi and Dunlap are evident in your network (self-similarity principle, proximity principle, share activities, etc)?

Building the relationship with your Superconnector (800 words)
You are required to interview your Superconnector or other key person in your network. The challenge is to find common ground and forge new connections by discussing the interviewee?s networks (for example, in relation to work, sport, hobbies, interests, family, etc). You may conduct your interview face to face or via electronic means or telephone. You can either provide your interview questions as an appendix, or use the questions as sub-headings for this section of the report. Some suggestions for questions are as follows, but you may use any questions you think are appropriate:

1. Please tell me about your various interests (and let me tell you about mine).
2. Please tell me about the key people in each of your networks (and let me tell you about mine).
3. Are there any people in my network you would like to meet?
4. Can you think of any people in your network who you think I would like to meet, or would like to meet me?
5. Are there any other activities that we might both enjoy doing together in the future?

You should analyse and comment on the responses from the interviewee, using at least two academic sources. Please do not simply recount the interviewee?s responses, but use ideas from academic sources to reflect on those responses and consider how your relationship with your Superconnector can be strengthened.

Conclusion (200 words)
Provide a concluding paragraph which demonstrates how you will build and maintain your network in the future. In particular, consider how your network and your Superconnector will assist you in achieving your personal and professional goals.

References
Please use Harvard author-date style throughout the report and provide a full reference list which matches your in-text references.
