African-American Studies ; because our own critics have been somewhat hesitant in taking control of our literary criticism custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

It is because our own critics have been somewhat hesitant in taking control of our literary criticism? that the task has fallen to others, some of whom? have been excellent and sensitive. And yet most of what remains to be done can best be tackled by ourselves, the owners. If we fall back, can we complain that others are rushing forward? A man who does not lick his lips, can he blame the harmattan for drying them?” (Critical Essays and Documents, p. 300).
What Chinua Achebe means is pertinent to a whole lot of colonialist and post- colonialist writers in the course: E. M. Forster, Derek Walcott, R. K. Narayan and Grace Nicholls. He implies whether the writers rejected the legacy left behind by the British or blended its positive contributions with their own native ones. As our course shows there were diverse reactions. The answer may be argued by referring to any two writers with examples from their works and a reference to other relevant critical essays such as Frantz Fanon?s ?On National Culture?, Chinweizu?s ?Decolonising African Literature? and Ashcroft?s ?Postcolonial Reconstructions: Literature, Meaning, Value?

Student Notes:
Students should explain their attitude about the issue raised above, build their thesis based on what they already studied about the new writers and new writings , and support their thesis with examples from texts studied in this block.

Students can consider the following guiding questions without feeling the need to answer all of them in any particular order:

? What does Achebe mean by the text quoted above? What is the main argument that he raised in his article ?Colonialist Criticism?? How Do Fanon, Chinweizu, and Ashcroft relate to Achebe?s argument?

? Is Achebe?s argument reflected / supported in his novel Things Fall Apart? Is this argument supported in other texts by other writers?

? Which of the writers you studied in this block support more Achebe?s argument? Which texts may not support this argument?

? How have these new writers dealt with the British legacy? Did they blend it in their writing or rejected it?

? How did they look at their own cultural heritage? Did they embrace this heritage or just saw it as a heritage that would never raise to the standards of the western heritage?

? How did they perceive their own oral literary tradition? Did they see it as equal to the Western written and canonized tradition?

? How do you evaluate the achievement of these new writers? works? Are they contributing to the project of a new national identity or not? Are they offering the readers a new way of looking at literature, culture, and ourselves (Westerns, Easterners, and Africans)?

? To what extent does the evaluation of the achievements of these new writings and new voices depend on the ?ideological side? of the reader as Achebe argues?

? Is this body of new writings homogenous or does it embody differences and dissimilarities that readers should be aware of in their interpretation?

A thesis statement and a proper logical presentation of ideas are necessary.

To do this TMA, you will need to do the following steps:

1. Plan your essay ahead of time by writing a plan highlighting the main points you intend to cover.
2. Write a thesis statement stating your argument to be included in the first page of your essay.
3. Select the two writers you decided to deal with and the works you will be referring to in your essay.
4. Refer to the texts and select some excerpts that relate to your argument. Give a summary of what these passages say and add to your own comments and interpretation.
5. Be aware of how others may present an argument that counterparts your own? Which texts may not fit with your argument?
6. Try to address and engage with the opposing argument
7. In writing your essay make sure you refer to at least two literary works of two different authors and two critical essays.
8. Your analytical comments should follow every time you quote from the text under discussion or the critical material you refer to. This means that you should explain in your own words whatever you quote from other sources.
9. Reference to critical material related to this topic is a must. (You should refer to at least 2 articles from the course).
10. Students should refer and quote from the course audio material whenever possible
11. At this stage, students are expected to know how to paraphrase and synthesize the material they read, using their own words as much as possible. They still have to quote and use quotation marks in the right annotation methods they learned from their tutors.
12. Make sure you ask your tutors in class and during their office hours for further clarifications.

homeland security Planning for WMD and Mass Casualty Crisis custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Prepare a 10 page draft template of an Emergency Preparedness Plan (EPP). To develop your plan, select a city/state/region (the region to be used is Newark, New Jersey) and cater the EPP towards a WMD, All Hazards, or any other potential mass casualty inducing event of your choice.

Your EPP template should contain an outline of the 8 topics needed for a complete EPP. In your outline, provide short explanations for each section or bullet points detailing the important objectives of the sections. Include how each of the 8 topics needed for a complete EPP fits into the following formats:

1.Functional format
2.Emergency-Support Function format
3.Agency/Department-Focused format
4.Any other approved format style outlined in the course material
Analyze one of the above listed EPP formats and determine if your template is tailored to the selected jurisdiction?s geographic, political, and social environment. Address the following concerns as they relate to your template.

1.The resulting plan represents the jurisdiction?s unique hazard and threat situation by ensuring that the underlying facts and assumptions that drove the template?s content match those applicable to the jurisdiction.
2.The hazard and risk assessments match the jurisdiction?s demographics, infrastructure inventory, probability of hazard occurrence, etc.
3.The template identifies the resources needed to address the problems generated by an emergency or disaster only in a general way.
4.Using the template may stifle creativity and flexibility, thereby constraining the development of strategies and tactics needed to solve disaster problems.
Also provide feedback on the benefits of teamwork vs. allowing a single individual to ?write? the plan.

Your paper should be around 10 pages in length. Do not forget to access the buttons below for the assignment checklist, submission directions, and helpful tips.

Schools, Peers, and Media Influences on Childhood Behavior and Beliefs custom essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Schools, peers, and the media can impact a child?s development. In schools, teachers play a role in encouraging academic success and student involvement. The characteristics of the school itself also can influence student involvement. For example, larger schools increase the sense of anonymity in students, and teachers are often hard-pressed to provide individualized instruction.
Peers aid in socialization, often through the act of play. Even young children begin to prefer to play with other children rather than play by themselves or with adults. Children often model their behaviors based on their peers. Peers can reinforce behaviors (which may be desirable or undesirable by caregivers or teachers); encourage socially appropriate behavior and attitudes, establish age-related values, and help children learn how to interact with others.

Although television and electronic media impact a child?s development, keep in mind that they only provide the medium for delivery of the message. The medium itself is neither inherently good nor bad. However, the harmful effects of television content (e.g., violence can increase aggressive behavior in viewers; stereotyped portrayals of ethnic and minority groups can leave viewers with inaccurate beliefs about these groups) are more readily recalled than the beneficial influences of some content (e.g., programs such as Sesame Street teach basic cognitive and pro-social skills to their young viewers).

To prepare for this Discussion, select a current event or news item about a child/children in which the impact of schools, peers, or media was integral.

With these thoughts in mind:

Write a brief description of the event or news item you selected. Then conceptualize and explain this event within the framework of social-emotional development theories. Be sure to include references to the impact of schools, peers, and/or media specific to the event or item. Provide a reference to the current event or news item and a link if possible.
