Write a 5-paragraph, 4-5 page essay, about one aspect of your physical identity, the body, and how that aspect of your physicality has shaped the way you view and interact with the world (i.e.society). Be specific, both about the nature of the physicality (skin color, gender, blue eyes, commanding height, large nose, big butt, attractiveness, physical similarities to one’s family, etc.) and about the interaction with some aspect of society (your perspective on, and relations with, members of the opposite sex, teachers, police, doctors, members of a different race or culture, children, the elderly, etc.)
You will need to provide reasons, research, and explanations – support to back up your claims. Specifically, you will have to use evidence from at least two of the essays we’ve read thus far to support your argument. This is a persuasive essay that takes a clear stance; considers the other side; offers clear reasoning; uses specific evidence; written in correct prose.

Tips for how to pick a good topic:
1) Pick something that comes from an emotional reaction inside you to the subject, question, prompt or situation you’ve been asked to write about. In other words:
• Something that sets off a reaction, either positive or negative, in relation to the idea or ideas you have to write about.
• Something that triggers an agreement or disagreement inside you.
If you think this is the weirdest thing you’ve ever heard from a teacher and that I’m crazy, I understand. Hang with me for a moment and I’ll explain.
Your emotional reaction is a clue—from yourself to yourself—that you actually have something to say about this topic, subject, prompt, question, idea or situation. When you get emotional and write from some sort of feeling (even a tiny little one), your emotion will cause an emotional reaction in your reader, (in this case, your grader), and make an emotional connection between your paper and them.
In writer’s terms, this connection hooks them into your paper and once they’re hooked emotionally, they will be a lot more interested than usual in what you have to say.
2) Make sure that you can come up with at least three main points that will support your argument.
3) For each main point, ensure that there is enough evidence out there to support it in your paper. Do some preliminary research to make sure.
Your topic (and thesis) should be controversial. In other words, if nobody would argue against it, you can’t write an effective persuasive essay because there is nothing to persuade.
Examples of strong topics and thesis statements related to those topics:
– Blond women in the workplace. (Topic)
o As a smart, independent woman, and a blonde, I often feel like I have to prove myself in the workplace by going above and beyond the call of duty and asserting my intelligence because I fear being dismissed based on a cliché. (Thesis)
– Being Jewish while not looking “typically” Jewish (Topic)
o As a modern, but secular Jew who doesn’t have stereotypically “Jewish” features, I often announce my Jewish heritage to other Jews, in order to relate and also promote kinship, while I often subconsciously hide this information from non-Jews, perhaps from some latent fear that I will be judged unfairly because of it. (Thesis)
