In this week’s Discussion, you considered ethics, which is closely related to values and morals. Every day, you probably behave in ways that are consistent with your ethics, values, and morals. Values suggest qualities that you consider important. For example, you may value honesty, persistence, and respect. It is ideal to lead and be lead by those who share your values. Exercise 10–1 guides you through an activity to help you determine your personal values orientation. Morals guide you to differentiate between right and wrong. Chapter 9 in your text explains how stages of moral development influence the way that leaders address moral dilemmas. Ethics, morals, and values should be important considerations to people in leadership roles—i ndeed, strong ethics, morals, and values can be influential on long-term organizational success.

To prepare for this assignment:
*Review Chapter 6 in your course text, The Art of Leadership. Pay particular attention to moral development and Kohlberg’s six stages of moral development covered in Table 9–1.
*Review Chapter 7 in your course text, The Art of Leadership. Focus on leadership and values.
*In Exercise 6–1, Moral Dilemmas, select one moral dilemma (the citizen, the salesperson, the administrative assistant, the parent, the firefighter, the friend, or the supervisor) and determine how you would address the dilemma.
*Review Table 6–1, Levels, Stages, and Examples of Moral Development. Think about which stage of moral development is most consistent with your response to the dilemma.
*Complete Exercise 7–1 , Personal Values—What Is Important to You? and Figure 10–1 , Your Personal Value Orientation. Reflect on what the exercises say about your personal values.
*Consider how morals and values could influence your role as a leader.

Your grade will be based upon a short written paper on a current topic of biological interest, with a MINIMUM of FIVE high quality, correctly written citations. You will research this topic using library databases to find and read scholarly journals. Textbooks are available in the stacks as well, but don’t tend to be current, so unless your topic is historical, don’t make them a large part of your research

Check your topic with me before beginning. If you have never written anything remotely like this in school so far, please study the two papers I attached below, then make an appointment to come talk with me. Your papers are due on July 19, sent electronically by midnight. If you are not satisfied with your grade, you will be allowed to write a second paper on a new topic, due on August 2. I will count the better of the two grades. If you do a good job, and your attendance is perfect (no unexcused absences) you do not have to write a second paper. Late papers will be marked down a tick for each day they are late, so if you would have gotten an A, but turned it in two days late, you get a B+.
General comments on “high quality citations”: For this exercise, I expect the bulk of your information to come from current (within 3-5 years) scholarly journals. You must cite them with standard format: Author(s), Title, Journal (or book chapter title), Volume, issue, pages (or book title, publisher, location of publisher. You can see such citations at the end of every scholarly article– use them as your guide. Do NOT give me URLs in your citation! Do NOT use Wikipedia as a citation, nor any general disease website except for WHO or NIH. If you are using the latter, I prefer you actually look up and read their citations– they are usually linked at the bottom. Don’t be lazy! Try not to use obscure journals– like Proceedings of East Podunk’s Medical and Dental Society. Find out what are the most reputable publications in the area you are studying.
E-citations: Linked databases are changing the way we communicate in the scientific world. Here are the most up to date guidelines for how to cite a web resource: http://guides.library.cornell.edu/citation I prefer that most of your citations come from scholarly articles, not textbooks or informational websites, although they are useful for learning about your topic. We will go over this in class. When you are citing an article that is indexed in Pubmed or Biosis ahead of its actual publication, make sure that you cite the authors, title, journal, date of e-pub.

2) For your topic, pick a current world hotspot and write a paper on its historical antecedents. Specifically, in your paper, describe three to five major events, developments, people, conflicts, etc. in the past that have had the most significant impact on the current situation, and explain why each is significant. While you can certainly spend the first couple of pages describing the current situation, do not focus the whole paper on it. Also, do not offer prescriptions for dealing with the current situation or predictions about the future. That is political science, not history!

3) Your research paper should be from 2500 to 3500 words (approximately 10-14 pages) of text (exclusive of title page, notes, and bibliography), employing a minimum of five scholarly books and five scholarly journal articles. By scholarly books, I mean books written by scholars or perhaps journalists that are based on extensive research. Scholarly journals are those found on Norwich Online Library databases such as JSTOR or EBSCO Host. Magazines like Time and Newsweek, for example, are not scholarly.

4) I assess the papers in three broad categories of descending relative value: content, writing, and format. Regarding the content in particular, I expect to see a thesis and an argument that supports that thesis, as opposed to narrative. The good news here is that coming up with a thesis should be relatively easy. For example, maybe one of the historical factors might strike you as more important than the others�that would then be your thesis. Your argument will essentially be the historical factors that you have identified.
Be sure to provide a brief but effective introduction that includes a clear thesis statement. The conclusion should restate your thesis and recap your major points�nothing more, nothing less.

5) Evidence and support should be based on your research. In conducting your research, be sure to use the Norwich Online Library first, rather than just going straight to the Internet. There is a wealth of great resources in the Library, including human resources. Don�t hesitate to contact the reference staff to help you with your research, as that is what they are there for!

6) As for writing, I am admittedly a picky grader. I expect clear and concise prose that is free of colloquialisms, jargon, and careless grammatical errors. Writing should be logically organized, with well-constructed paragraphs (each paragraph should be not more than about a half-page), and smooth transitions from paragraph to paragraph.

7) Format includes font, margins, spacing, etc, as well as citations. I like a standard Times New Roman 12 black font, double-spaced and left-aligned. Please do not justify or center-align the text. Also, do not use headers, page breaks, etc. Margins should be standard 1� all around. Citations and bibliography should follow APA format.

The three compositions have not been used in the course. Listen to them as many times as you like and, then, in a similar manner to the Listening Assignments, write about what you hear (up to one page per piece). Make an educated guess about the style, the date of the composition (or perhaps just the decade), and perhaps the composer. Most importantly, give the reasons for your guesses (and back them up with material learned in the course).

Keep in mind that this is not about recognizing the music, or knowing who the composer is! Instead, it is about recognizing the elements that make up the style of each piece. Your guesses may be incorrect, but if your reasoning is sound, you may still receive an “A.” Likewise, you might correctly identify the pieces and the composers but still receive only a “C-,” if your submission lacks a reasoned commentary.

The final project for this course will allow students to demonstrate their knowledge of children’s cognitive development and apply this knowledge to working with children to meet their diverse needs and abilities. The students will write an eight- to ten- page paper that outlines the development of a child from birth through age eight from both a theoretical and cognitive skill/ knowledge based perspective. 1. Apply the procedures for argumentation analysis (located in Chapter 8) to display contending positions and underlying assumptions for the content of Review Question 1.
2. Rate the assumptions and plot them according to their plausibility and importance. (Refer to Figure 3.16, “Distribution of warrant by plausibility and importance.”)
3. Determine which arguments are the most plausible. Provide a rationale for your views.
(Note: Refer to Demonstration Exercise 1 located at the end of Chapter 3 for criteria 4-6.)
4. Apply the procedures for stakeholder analysis presented in Box 3.0 “Conducting a Stakeholder Analysis” to generate a list of stakeholders who affect or are affected by problems in the issue area chosen for analysis.
5. Create a cumulative frequency distribution from the list, placing stakeholders (numbered 1 – n) on the horizontal axis; placing the number of new ideas generated by each stakeholder; and then connecting the total new ideas of each stakeholder with a line graph. (Note: The ideas may be objectives, alternatives, outcomes causes, etc.; ideas should not be duplicates. The frequency distribution can be created in Excel or PowerPoint using the chart feature.)
6. Write an analysis of the results of the frequency distribution that answers the following questions: (a) Does the line graph flatten out? (b) If so, after how many stakeholders? (c) What conclusions can be drawn about the policy problems in the issue area? (Note: Compare your work with Case Study 3.1 at the end of the chapter.)
7. Provide at least two (2) academic or government resources to support your views. (Note: Do not use open source Websites such Wikipedia, Sparknotes.com, Ask.com, and similar Websites are not acceptable resources.)
