By now you should have a pretty strong understanding of what the company does and how it works. Now identify an OB area of improvement for the organization (e.g., merger of cultures, low employee satisfaction, high turnover, change in management, change in people related processes, low employee engagement, poor communication, high conflict levels, an overly political environment, team related issues, etc.). Be careful to avoid topics that are NOT OB related (e.g., marketing, operations, finance, etc.) For possible areas of change, look to the annual reports to identify areas the company plans on improving and/or look to what the media or pundits are saying about the company.
1. Define the focal problem of the change effort and describe its underlying causes and consequences (i.e., why is it important?).
2. Describe your vision of the organization following a successful change effort (i.e., the future state).
3. What specific goals do you need to accomplish to resolve this problem? For example, if you currently have turnover of 30%, you might have a goal of reducing it to 15%. Describe how you planned to measure improvement.
4. Identify specific people (or roles) whose support you need to implement the change. Describe what you need to do to gain their support.
5. How could you convince people in the organization to feel an urgent need to change.
6. Describe what specific steps you could take to implement change. Develop and include a timeline outlining key project milestones and who needs to do what, when.
Conclusion (1 page):
Finish your paper with a brief articulation of lessons you have learned in the OB project. The format and content to this segment are flexible. I would prefer an honest and candid articulation. Rather than briefly listing a great many items, it is better if you discuss 3-4 ideas more in-depth. You may choose to discuss what you learned about your company that was surprising and/or exciting. Perhaps you could discuss what you learned about organizations in general as you went through the process of writing this report. Be sure to include how knowing what you now know will impact you in our career and worldview.
