Understanding the way an organization functions provides a lens through which to analyze the organizational elements and how they are linked. The course resources have provided you a strong background in how organizations in educational contexts operate on a daily basis. You have identified and studied an organization’s components, as well as the individuals and groups that function in the organization, and have considered variables that can impact organization development. The interrelatedness of the aspects of an organization will be illustrated as you complete this Parametric System Analysis.
A parametric model format is one that allows you to modify or manipulate graphic entities in a nonlinear model using variables, known as parameters, which show the ripple effect of even small changes in an organization.
Resources for this Discussion:
Reading:
Cummings and Worley text:
Chapter 8, “Performance Management”
Gallos text:
Chapter 16, “Reframing Complexity: A Four-Dimensional Approach to Organizational Diagnosis, Development, and Change.” You also might refer back to this chapter to support your work.
To prepare for the Discussion, read the chapter in the text, access the multimedia “Parametric System Analysis,” and also view the following components of the “State University School of Education Case Study”:
Gathering and analyzing data
Synthesis/report writing, and debriefing and discussing findings
Read Situation #1 in the multimedia “Parametric System Analysis,” and roll over each of the diagram ovals to see the definition of the organizational component. Click RUN to see how changes in the component impact not only the budget but also the outcomes of the program. Reflect on the impact those changes had on the organization. Why would faculty productivity decrease due to the changes made?
Then read Situation #2. Predict how the changes in data might impact the various components. Then click RUN to see if your predictions hold true.
By Day 7 of Week 9:
Post at least one “lesson learned” about the complexity and interrelatedness of organizations and how this knowledge will be helpful in your current (or future) role as an educational leader. Use citations as needed, or reflect on your learning in light of the readings.
Dear Class,
Welcome to our next to last discussion!
Keep in mind that this topic gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your analytical understanding of how organizations function with attention to their core components. That is what is behind using parametric system analysis and manipulating the parameters in our course project/feasibility study. Please make sure you do the exercise and address (1) at least one “lesson learned” about the complexity and interrelatedness of organizations and (2) how this knowledge will be helpful in your current (or future) role as an educational leader.
